A tragic incident broke out in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district when an 18-month-old girl died when she fell into a water-filled lift pit in an under-construction building. It took place not far from the Government First Grade College in Hirebidanur village of Gauribidanur taluk.
As per early information, the deceased child was the daughter of Rajpal and Shwetha, a couple working as construction labourers on the site. The family had been staying near the construction area while carrying out their daily work. The child was playing near the building when the tragic incident took place.
Witnesses say the girl accidentally wandered near an unfinished lift shaft that had accumulated water. Not aware of the danger, she slipped and fell into the pit. The family and workers didn’t even notice she was missing until they went to look for her.
The child was eventually found in the water-filled lift pit. Despite efforts by the family to save her, the toddler could not be saved. The death has left grieving parents broken down when they realised their only daughter had drowned.
The incident has generated widespread anger among the residents and workers who have accused the contractor of negligence. The construction site was not safe to work at all, they said, since workers and families were present and the lift pit was left open and unprotected.
Some residents expressed concern that dangerous areas of the construction site had not been properly barricaded. They argued that preventive measures such as safety fencing, warning signs, or temporary covers over the lift shaft could have prevented the tragedy. Safety standards on construction sites in the state are at stake again, they said.
After the incident, the child was transferred to the Gauribidanur Public Hospital for post-mortem examination. Family members and local people protested at the hospital, demanding justice and action against those responsible for safety at the site.
The grieving parents claim their daughter's death could have been prevented and are calling on the authorities to take legal action against the contractor. Residents are demanding to know whether safety requirements were followed during construction work.
Police officials from Gauribidanur Town Police Station reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. A case has been registered, and an investigation is ongoing to understand the circumstances that led to the child's death. The contractor or site management is expected to be probed for the cause of the accident.
Construction site safety is a major issue in many parts of the country, especially where workers and their families live near work zones. Safety experts stress that lift pits, open trenches, and unfinished buildings should be secured to prevent accidents involving workers, visitors, and children.
Residents hope the tragic loss of the young child will lead to tougher safety regulations at construction sites. The community is grieving, and they want accountability to ensure that this type of tragedy will never happen again.
