CJP Secures State Guarantees: Protests Averted Following Late-Night Talks With Government

CJP has pulled back from threatening new street demonstrations, and has been able to secure crucial legal protections for arrested and detained demonstrators. In a long-lasting, multi-hour negotiation with government officials, the CJP leadership declared that there will be state-level notifications issued to guarantee the safety of all the participants involved in the recent mass mobilizations.

The breakthrough follows high-stakes political friction that nearly plunged the capital back into turmoil. CJP leaders had already been vocalizing frustration earlier in the week, calling the breach a deep breach of long-standing agreements as reports of aggressive police crackdowns, surveillance and sudden student arrests spread across Bihar, West Bengal and the national capital. Leaders made clear that if the state continued targeting logistic volunteers and filing arbitrary First Information Reports (FIRs), the youth-led movement would immediately return to the streets to start aggressive agitations again.

In response to these mounting ultimatums, government intermediaries arranged a marathon dialogue lasting almost three hours. During this time officials provided tangible proof of compliance with the order which has been given to all the Home Departments of Bihar and Assam. The circulars are as follows: withdraw all FIRs that were pending, prohibit any future action against the demonstrators and release all those in jail.

Furthering these developments in a late-night update shared on digital platforms last night, CJP Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das also said that similar legal cushions have been secured for Rajasthan. Das added that administration officials in Rajasthan have ensured that no legal proceedings or penal measures against any local protesters will be taken. Also, the central administration is in conversation to develop consistent guarantee notifications which will be served across Union territories and other BJP/NDA-managed states.

As soon as the threat of unrest is removed, the CJP organizers say vigilance is still needed. The movement will be closely monitoring implementation to ensure that the agreed definition of law is enforceable, they said. It has been able to extract political concessions from the government, including the suspension of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and the CJP says it will continue to work together with the youth of the country to make sure no single demonstrator is left to contend with legal retribution alone.
