Avesh befriended the girl’s brother because of the deception that he was a Hindu. Through the false personage he earned the family affection and then locked the girl. He also recorded obscene videos of her into a folder that he used for blackmail when he wouldn’t share them, threatening to leak the contents if she did not satisfy him. This sort of control of power over emotion and terror.

When Bajrang Dal members confronted him, they found more than 40 videos of different girls on his phone. It horrified the community and indicated a trend of predatory acts conducted against multiple victims. Avesh admitted to his acts on camera before being handed over to police.

Huge anger and debate in Bhopal and beyond on the trial and the way the case has fuelled people’s thoughts, anger and debate. Many citizens are demanding that the woman’s punishment be high: through video collection they can access the others’ accounts. Public discussion on social media and there has to be a better response if women are being exploited and blackmailed more frequently with false names as we were told on television.

This incident underscores the danger of young girls in a situation of trust being stolen. And that speaks to the extent to which technology can be exploited to record obscene material. Discovering many videos in all the media has opened up the field that could mean further exploitation is deeper than this single case. Community members are pushing for an entire system to detect and respond to where we are better aware, strengthen those authorities and increase supervision of these crimes.

Civil society groups and average people now call on the government to conduct an extensive investigation and bring justice to all victims. And it's important to teach young people about online security and trust– and to not fall prey to manipulation. It is a wake‑up call both to parents and police.

The Bhopal case is not only about one victim; it represents an entire continuum of exploitation, abuse and deceit of trust. As the investigation continues, this case is seen for justice as an important one which will only escalate and bring about the kind of reform we have already had. Society demands police and courts do what is required to take action against such crimes so, in some sense, it’s how vulnerable people are protected from predators.
