A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has triggered widespread heavy rainfall over Odisha, alarming neighbors of Odisha and officials were putting up flood preparations and emergency response activities.
Heavy rain in some districts in India has triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in some districts and residents should be cautious as the weather system moves inland.
Since the system entered a deep depression, many parts of the state have experienced persistent rainfall, leading to waterlogging, overflowing drains, and disruption to daily life.
Coastal as well as interior districts, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal, have received significant showers over the last day.
The IMD warned that heavy rainfall could lead to extremely heavy rainfall in some places in the next 24 to 48 hours which is likely to happen in the near future and, according to the IMD, it may happen in a few areas.
Strong winds along coastal areas have also impacted coastal areas and officials say fishermen should avoid entering the ocean until conditions get better.
The Odisha government has also put disaster management teams in place on the ready to respond to any emergency.
Personnel from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and state fire services have been deployed to high-risk areas.
District administrations are closely watching areas in low-lying regions and will evacuate residents if necessary.
Heavy rains have disrupted transport in many parts of the state. Roads have been stuck and traffic in urban areas is still blocked by heavy rain and in some parts of the state are shut down by waterlogged roads, the city areas have been slow in traffic congestion and buses and trains have been delayed due to poor visibility and flooding.
Local authorities are trying to clear off the waterlogged roads and blocked drainage systems and restore normal movement wherever possible.
River levels are also being monitored as continuous rainfall increases the possibility of flooding. They are closely monitoring the Mahanadi river system and other major waterways to determine the necessity of controlled water releases from reservoirs.

Residents living near riverbanks are advised to stay alert and monitor the situation and follow up on the information from the local governments.
The agricultural sector is also facing challenges due to the prolonged rainfall. Paddy fields and vegetable crops in the low-lying areas are prone to waterlogging and farmers are worried.
Agriculture officials are monitoring the situation and will assess crop damage once weather conditions stabilize.
The state government has opened emergency control rooms in affected districts and asked people not to travel during heavy rainfall.
Flooded roads and bridges should be avoided, residents should go home and stay indoors and stay informed through official weather bulletins and government advisories, they said.
The deep depression will gradually weaken after moving inland, but its rain bands will continue to produce heavy showers over Odisha and neighboring states in the next few days, weather experts say.
Public safety and preparedness are high on the state’s mind at the moment as it is dealing with a monsoon system in full force.
