Kodagu: Residents of Napoklu town in Kodagu district, in Karnataka's Kodagu district, saw an unusual sight after a deer, believed to have walked in from a forest in the busy town of Napoklu, wandered into the bustling town in the area and attracted hundreds of curious people.
The incident took place in Napoklu, in Madikeri taluk, and the frightened animal was first seen running around the town’s bus stand. The deer’s unexpected appearance caused local people to go out to see it.
The deer appeared disoriented and frightened as it moved through the crowded streets, probably lost its way while trying to head back to the forest, said a witness. But residents were worried the animal might get hurt or go into a car accident, so they bandaged it up.
The deer was ultimately cornered and safely caught close to the Canara Bank building in Napoklu. Residents handled the rescue carefully to make sure the frightened deer was not injured in the process.
After the deer had been secured, locals provided it with minimal care, and it remained calm until officials from the Forest Department arrived at the scene.
The rescued deer was later handed over to the Karnataka Forest Department, which took custody of the animal for a medical examination and further observation. Forest officials will study its health before releasing it back into its natural habitat in a nearby forest area.
Wildlife experts believe such incidents are more common during the monsoon season, when wild animals occasionally stray into human settlements and may be searching for food or water, or just after becoming separated from their habitat. Also, the expansion of human settlements near forest areas means that wildlife is more likely to encounter humans.
The incident drew a large crowd in Napoklu, and many residents took pictures and videos of the deer before it was rescued. While the unexpected visitor generated excitement, officials warned the public that wild animals should not be chased, disturbed, or surrounded, as they can become stressed and unpredictable.
Forest officials were grateful for the quick action taken by the locals who brought the deer with them to safety and took it to the authorities.
But the authorities in the area have also said people living around forests should immediately inform the Forest Department when wild animals enter residential areas so that trained personnel can handle rescue operations safely.
The successful rescue of the deer underscores the need for cooperation between local communities and wildlife officials to protect human life as well as wild animals. The deer will be able to return safely to its natural environment thanks to the quick response of the residents and the Forest Department.
