A tragic incident in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun has triggered outrage after a government school teacher was found dead at her home just eight months after her marriage. Srishti Kandari, who had left home in Doiwala, was found dead after a long period of mental harassment, dowry-related abuse and being labeled “inauspicious” by an astrologer’s comment, her family said.
Yet again it has brought home the legacy of superstition and domestic abuse in educated families. Police have formally opened a criminal case and begun a very detailed investigation of the tragedy at the school.
Emotional Video Message Sent Before Death
Srishti had sent an emotional video message to her mother right before her death, her family said.
In the video, she apologised to her mother and said she was unable to bear the continuous humiliation and harassment she allegedly faced in her marital home.
The message has come to be one of the most important pieces of evidence in the investigation.
Marriage Turned Into Distress
Srishti married Saurabh Ratouri, a government employee from Harrawala, in November 2025. According to her family, the marriage was celebrated with great joy, but after a few months her life became more difficult.
When Srishti stopped responding to phone calls from her parents on July 28 and 29, her family became concerned. Unable to reach her, they asked friends in Dehradun to go to her home in Doiwala.
When they reached the house, they found Srishti dead.
Her family has also claimed they were not immediately informed about her death and claim her in-laws attempted to conceal the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Superstition and Mental Harassment
According to the complaint filed by the family, the harassment intensified after Srishti’s mother-in-law reportedly suffered a heart attack three months after the marriage.
The family claims that an astrologer told the household that misfortune had begun only after the new bride entered the family.
After those comments, Srishti was reported as “inauspicious” and blamed for every unhappy incident that happened in the house. Family members say even small things like breaking household items were attributed to her presence, and her humiliation and emotional abuse continued.
They also claim that after the death of her mother-in-law, the mental harassment worsened significantly, leaving Srishti emotionally devastated.
Police Register Case
Based on the complaint filed by the victim's family, Doiwala Police have registered a case against her husband Saurabh Ratouri and two other members of the family.

Legal Provisions
India’s law treats the suspicious death of a married woman within seven years of marriage with utmost seriousness, particularly when allegations of dowry harassment or cruelty emerge.
The investigators are looking at whether the evidence is there for offences of cruelty, abetment or otherwise under the law.
Police have said if there is enough evidence, there will be strict legal action taken against those responsible.
A Reminder Against Superstition and Abuse
The heartbreaking incident has reignited public debate about the dangers of superstition and the emotional damage caused by domestic abuse.
Some social activists say that educated families are not immune to harmful beliefs that stigmatise women by placing blame on them for personal tragedies or family misfortunes.
Mental health professionals also stress that emotional humiliation and isolation can have debilitating effects. They counsel families to seek counselling, communicate openly and advocate for people in distress rather than reinforce harmful superstitions.
As the investigation continues, authorities have warned the public not to speculate on what the cause of death might be until it is clear. Forensic evidence will have to be forthcoming, and the police investigation will be conducted.
