All ministers and members of Delhi’s Legislative Assembly (MLAs) participated in a Tiranga Yatra organised on the premises of the Delhi Legislative Assembly before Independence Day. The event brought elected representatives together to show national pride and to encourage citizens to take part in the spirit of India's Independence Day.
The Tiranga Yatra centered on the national flag was part of the preparations for Independence Day 2026. Ministers and MLAs in the Delhi Assembly took the opportunity to demonstrate patriotism, national unity and respect for the Tricolour as the country begins another anniversary of its independence.
The Indian national flag is one of the very few symbols of the nation’s Independence Day celebrations. Every year government institutions, schools, offices, residential communities and public organisations organise events featuring the Tricolour. Flag marches, cultural programmes, patriotic performances and awareness campaigns are all organised by governments that take a patriotic picture of the country and the country’s history and democratic values into account.
The Tiranga Yatra at Delhi Legislative Assembly added a political and civic element to these celebrations. Elected representatives were present in the national day events to represent the country. Such events also serve to underline the importance of the Constitution, democracy as well as the responsibilities of public service.
Independence Day is celebrated across India every year on 15 August. It is celebrated on the day of India’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The national flag should be hoisted, patriotic programmes and public events in states and Union Territories are also planned.
Independence Day celebrations in Delhi are particularly important because the country’s central ceremony takes place on the Red Fort. The Prime Minister traditionally addresses the nation from the historic monument after unfurling the national flag. It is watched by millions of people across India and abroad.
Local and state-based events such as the Tiranga Yatra, which encourage a lot of public optimism well before the main events, contribute to this. They also raise people’s involvement in the national events and bring people from various localities and backgrounds together under the national flag.
The Delhi Assembly event will bring the atmosphere of Independence Day 2026 to a wider scene of the Delhi Assembly when it takes place. With political representatives in the national scene as a whole, the programme also highlights the symbolic significance of national events and how national events bring public bodies and the people with a common national heritage and their institutions and citizens together to a common cause.
The Tricolour itself is one of the most recognizable symbols of India. The saffron, white and green bands, together with the Ashoka Chakra at the centre of our flag represent fundamental national ideals and values. Independence Day festivals often use the flag as the ultimate symbol of unity and group identity.
Independence Day goes beyond the day of performance to also allow us to reflect on India’s development since 1947. Technology, infrastructure, education, healthcare, industry and governance have changed significantly in India. But the time also allows citizens to understand what we have to do to bring about democracy and contribute to the development of the country.
Therefore the participation of Delhi Cabinet ministers and MLAs in the Tiranga Yatra is important beyond the event itself. It is part of the public mood in the months leading up to August 15 and it is indicative of national symbols and the public’s awareness of them.

As Independence Day 2026 approaches, similar Tiranga Yatras and patriotic activities will be carried out in various parts of Delhi and in the country. Schools, government departments, civic bodies and community organisations will also organise activities to include citizens in the celebrations.
The Delhi Legislative Assembly Tiranga Yatra has added another event to Delhi’s Independence Day calendar. Ministers and MLAs are taking part and the event has also highlighted the spirit of patriotism and national unity before one of India’s most important national occasions.
