A tragic incident happened in Jaiprakash Nagar when the roof of a residential house collapsed and the two people in the building died in the wake of that collapse and the residents were in shock.
It’s a case that once again makes old buildings of the capital and the poor construction more vulnerable.
The roof collapsed suddenly and the inhabitants were trapped under the debris, local residents said. Local residents rushed to the scene and notified emergency services immediately. Delhi Fire Service, police and disaster response teams were on the spot at the time and started a rescue operation.
The victims were pulled out from the rubble and rushed to a nearby hospital. But doctors declared both of them dead. Details about the victims are just being made public, and efforts are being made to inform family members.
Workers salvaged the debris to make sure no one else was trapped under the collapsed structure. People who had been in other buildings to prevent any more accidents were also checked out and inspections were done nearby to be sure, the report said.
Structural weakness, aging construction and recent weather conditions could have caused the collapse, the report said.
Police have registered the case and started an investigation. Civic authorities also need to assess the building’s condition, construction history and whether it was safe to use. Engineers can conduct a structural audit to get the real reason behind the collapse.

Building collapses are not unusual in older parts of Delhi in which a lot of residential homes have been standing for decades without any maintenance. The experts have previously stressed that regular structural inspections are necessary in the monsoon season as heavy rainfall can weaken old buildings and increase the risk of collapse.
Residents of the locality expressed grief about the tragedy and demanded stricter action against unsafe buildings. Many urged municipal authorities to identify vulnerable structures and perform repairs or evacuation of them before any similar event occurs in other places.
The tragedy is only a reminder to the city that building safety standards need to be put in place in a stronger manner. Residents living in old or visibly damaged houses have been advised to seek structural assessments frequently in the rainy season, and to do so in a more timely manner.
The collapse was not an accident so we are looking forward to getting the report on the cause of it, which is why we need to do all we can so it can be avoided in the future. A rescue team is on high alert until the debris clearance is completed.
The unfortunate deaths have left local residents in grief and more pressure will be put on the local community to monitor aging residential buildings.
The investigation will show whether negligence, poor maintenance, or structural failure were factors in the deadly incident.
