The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the area. Police arrested the woman who was driving the SUV within hours after the accident and impounded the vehicle.

Police said the victims were 79-year-old Dayanand Tagra and his 71-year-old wife Kusum Tagra. They were walking home after their morning routine when a Hyundai Creta suddenly veered off the road and hit them from behind at 9.30 a.m. They were injured in the collision and both were admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

A CCTV video of the incident was also released, which shows the seconds before the crash happened and the aftermath of it. Hyundai Creta took a left turn and suddenly veered off course and plowed into the elderly couple, witnesses said. The impact was extremely strong with the 79-year-old man thrown into the air before crashing into the road and the wife was also knocked down and fell near an electric pole.

The CCTV footage also showed the woman driver stepping out of the SUV shortly after the crash. She seemed to approach the injured elderly man who was lying face down on the road. She looked at him for a few seconds before she went back to her car and drove away from the scene. People were seen rushing towards the couple and helping them.

Police launched an investigation soon after learning of the accident. The driver was 49-year-old Naveen Kaur, according to the police. Police arrested her and seized the Hyundai Creta involved in the crash.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Hareshwar V Swami said the couple was taken to a private hospital following the accident. Dayanand Tagra sustained serious head injuries and his wife was wounded in the rear of the body with a broken neck and the backside of her body was also injured, the police said.

The case was registered at Kirti Nagar Police Station under relevant provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police took the woman driver to the BNS for rash driving or riding on a public way in a manner that endangers human life or is likely to cause hurt or injury to another person. Investigation is ongoing to establish the exact cause of the collision and the vehicle's departure from the scene.

For Delhi, the accident has reignited concerns over road safety in the city, especially for pedestrians as well as the elderly people who take public roads for walks in the morning. Hit-and-run accidents can leave victims without immediate help and time for medical treatment quickly and frequently makes it difficult for the city to treat them. CCTV footage and witnesses helped investigators quickly catch and track the vehicle and driver in this case.

The incident demonstrates the necessity of responsible driving in areas where pedestrians are present too. Drivers are expected to keep their vehicles in position, in line with speed limits and keep the vehicle at the scene to help injured people and to cooperate with authorities.

As the investigation progresses, police will look at CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the sequence of events. Meanwhile, the elderly couple’s well-being is still one of the main concerns as they recover from injuries.
