The Delhi Police are now beefing up security measures in the capital ahead of Independence Day 2026 and a 60 picket-only security drive has received more than 1,600 personnel in the city as well.
The increased arrangements are an effort to keep the city safe, to have surveillance in place and to have security in place in advance of the big summer celebrations at Delhi in August. Police have increased general patrolling, vehicle checks and anti-terrorism measures in different parts of the city.
The security exercise is at a very sensitive moment as Independence Day is expected to take place on the Red Fort. The national capital is usually under high security during the period of August 15 as many people are visiting it, public rallies and people are on the way to the grandstand. Delhi Police are taking a multi-dimensional approach with ground deployment, traffic management, surveillance and coordination with different departments.
DCP West District Hareshwar V. Swami said general patrolling was being carried out around Delhi under the watch of Police Commissioner. Police personnel have been deployed on the roads to maintain a visible security presence, he said. Anti-terrorism measures, extensive vehicle checking, bike patrols and foot patrols are also being carried out as part of the wider security exercise.
The deployment is synchronized with Delhi Police personnel as well as PCR and Traffic Police personnel. The integration of different units is intended to ensure the security and traffic management functions work well together rather than being separated. The coordination is particularly important during big national events that can add more traffic to the city’s roads and public spaces when more people are walking and driving, and the city’s streets and public spaces are also full of more traffic.
The overnight security drive also reflects the greater security preparations across Delhi. Police have beefed up checkpoints and pickets at strategic locations and police are checking vehicles and tracking movement in sensitive areas. The aim is not only to respond to potential incidents but to have a visible presence that can deter suspicious activity and reassure residents.
So, security arrangements are being strengthened around the Red Fort and surrounding areas. Besides physical deployment, authorities are relying on surveillance infrastructure and coordination with other agencies. Delhi Police also are strengthening the security of CCTV infrastructure around the Red Fort where a total of about 1,000 cameras have been audited for the Independence Day.
The preparations are also an important part of traffic management. Delhi Traffic Police has imposed road restrictions around the Red Fort ahead of the full dress rehearsal for August 13, since the full-dress rehearsal in Delhi Traffic Police has been put in place to contain traffic on the Red Fort. Traffic management will be a key component of all preparations. There are some roads that will be closed for the rehearsal and commuters should plan their route accordingly. Parking and alternate routes have been recommended from authorities too.
The increased security presence will be visible to residents and commuters all over the city. Vehicle checks, identity verification and additional patrols may slow movement down at some places around important roads, public gathering points and sensitive installations. The police are asking citizens to cooperate with police personnel during checks and to follow traffic directions.
In addition to the security drive, foot and motorcycle patrols are also part of the safety drive and police can patrol areas not easily accessible by vehicle patrols in the streets. Foot patrols can help police to get in touch with the community and to monitor markets, residential areas and other public spaces so that they can better track them.
The Delhi Police’s approach is part of a larger mission to make Independence Day celebrations more peaceful. In the past, the capital has always been given a massive security cover before the day of August 15; several agencies are responsible for the security of important venues and crowd control.
Delhi Metro authorities also intensified security checks throughout the metro network during the Independence Day period. Security checks at stations have been reinforced from August 9 to August 16 and passengers are advised to cooperate with security personnel and allow more time for travel.
In the case of regular residents, the security might mean more checks on the roads, public transportation facilities and other busy places. Commuters traveling through the Red Fort should especially watch for traffic advisories since rehearsal and Independence Day arrangements could affect regular routes.
Police presence is also expected to remain strong around transportation hubs and other areas with high public footfall. PCR, Traffic Police and local police units will be integrated if there is an issue.
And so the Independence Day security operation is not restricted to one venue. Instead, authorities are keeping a citywide presence in place and placing more emphasis on sensitive spots and major public gathering areas. Checkpoints, vehicle checks, foot patrols, motorcycle patrols and surveillance are combined to create multiple layers of security.
The deployment of around 1,600 personnel in 60 pickets in the reported security drive shows the scale of preparations in the West district and the rest of the capital. As August 15 approaches and security assessments and traffic demands vary, officials will continue assessing arrangements and adjust.

The key message for Delhi residents is to be alert, cooperate with security personnel and plan travel ahead in advance, especially around August 13 and August 15. People who travel near the Red Fort and central Delhi should be on guard and be prepared for more checks and possible traffic restrictions.
With Independence Day less than a week away, Delhi Police’s intensified overnight drive underlines the need for public safety to be ensured during one of India’s biggest national events.
