Delhi Weather Today: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms After Warmest July Night in Five Years

Delhi is likely to see a generally cloudy day on Saturday, with light to medium rain, thunderstorms and lightning forecast in isolated parts of the city (IMD). The weather department has also issued a yellow alert warning for gusty winds, short-lived rain and thunderstorms due to its warmest July night in the past five years (JWL-2016).

The forecast gives some relief from the heat and humidity that have been displayed in Delhi over the past few days. But the IMD has warned that rainfall will be scattered, not widespread, so many areas will experience uncomfortable weather.

IMD Forecast for Saturday

According to IMD, Delhi will be under mostly cloudy skies throughout the day. The maximum temperature is expected to be between 36°C and 38°C and the minimum temperature around 28°C to 30°C.

Southwesterly winds are predicted to blow at 20 to 25 kmph in the morning and then slow down to 10 to 15 kmph later in the day.

The weather department has forecast occasional periods of very light to light rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. Surface winds could strengthen to 20-30 kmph during thunderstorm activity, and gusts can reach up to 40 kmph in the morning and afternoon.

Yellow Alert Issued

The IMD has placed Delhi on a yellow alert, and residents should be on high alert because thunderstorms and strong winds can disrupt normal life. Although no widespread heavy rainfall is expected, isolated showers may be enough to provide short-term relief from the heat and humidity levels.

Warmest July Night in Five Years

On Friday, Delhi had a minimum temperature of 31°C at Safdarjung weather station, the city’s warmest July night in five years. The minimum temperature was almost four degrees above the seasonal average, a testament to the hot and humid conditions.

The daytime weather was also quite unpleasant with the maximum temperature rising to 38.8°C, about 3.6 degrees above normal. But in spite of periodic cloud cover, high temperatures and humidity made conditions oppressive in many areas of the city.

Possible Impact on Daily Life

Although rain might be able to lower temperatures at first, thunderstorms and gusty winds might cause some disruption. Slippery roads and limited visibility during brief showers may slow traffic in some areas, especially during peak travel hours.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, while commuters should be prepared for short delays if thunderstorms develop.

IMD's Advice for Residents

The weather department has advised residents to take precautions when conditions change. People who are outside must have umbrellas or rain gear, because isolated showers can occur without much warning.

The IMD has also recommended people not to shelter under trees or close to weak structures in thunderstorms as lightning and strong winds are threats. Residents should wear light cotton clothing, keep hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun whenever possible.

Relief May Be Limited

Although Saturday’s weather is expected to bring some rain, meteorologists forecast that relief from the heat could be temporary because rainfall is likely to be more isolated and not widespread.

So despite the cloudy skies and intermittent showers, Delhi residents may continue to face uncomfortable conditions with occasional cooling spells. Authorities will monitor the weather closely, and residents are advised to follow updates issued by the IMD as thunderstorm activity develops during the day.
