"Don't Want to Die": Noida Techie Drowns in Open Ditch; Chilling Final Phone Call to Father Surfaces

Aman Singh, 26, a software engineer, drowned on Saturday evening after falling into a ditch in Noida’s Sector 132 that was flooded with water. The death caused ripples in the community not just due to the loss of life, but also because of the last words Aman shared with his father as he fought to survive.

The Fatal Accident

When heavy rains fell, Aman was reportedly going back to his PG accommodation after working at a top multinational company in Noida and was from Prayagraj. There was low visibility, and the road had already started to become submerged. Witnesses said Aman failed to spot an unmarked, deep trench dug for utility repairs and slipped down through it. The ditch, reportedly left without any barricades or warning signs, quickly became filled with rainwater, which meant Aman had no way out in the treacherous waters.

The Last Phone Call

One haunting thing about the tragedy is the phone call Aman made to his father, Satish Singh, while he was stuck. “Papa, I’m trapped in a pit and the water is going up. I can't get out. Please save me; I don’t want to die,” Aman said in what’s believed to have been a 40-second call over which he cried.

His father, who was miles away, heard only horror before the line went dead. Even though his father called the local emergency services and Aman’s friends in an attempt to save him, by the time rescuers arrived, things were already too late.

Negligence Allegations

The family alleges gross negligence by local developmental authorities as well as the contractor. “There were no tapes or boards or lights. My son had paid for their negligence with his life,” Satish Singh said to reporters as he waited for his son’s body. The death traps that construction works in Noida have created are long been reported by local residents within the region to be in dispute. Since the incident, police filed an FIR registered against the unidentified contractor and also against the officials who oversee the site's maintenance in compliance with Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.

Safety Outcry inside NCR

The outbreak is the latest flashpoint that raises a storm of discussion over how tech centres and residential districts can be safe in Noida after monsoons and construction works in Gurugram. In order to prevent yet another “Aman” from sustaining the same preventable outcome, activists are demanding a “safety audit” on all open construction sites.
