A shocking incident of a traffic police officer being assaulted in Lucknow has prompted public outrage after a video of the encounter was posted on social media. The police have now arrested the driver, and authorities have reiterated their commitment to the safety of law enforcement officers and to maintaining order.
The incident took place at a busy intersection in Lucknow in a traffic enforcement effort, police said. The traffic officer had stopped the driver for what was being called a traffic violation and was performing routine checks when the two got into a verbal argument, police said.
Witnesses said the driver became aggressive when asked to produce the documents. In the heat of the argument, the accused allegedly assaulted the traffic officer in full public view. The incident was recorded on mobile phones, and the video was widely shared on various social media sites. The public quickly condemned the driver.
The viral video shows the driver thrusting and attacking the officer while passersby try to intervene. The officer took the abuse but did not want to get attacked, and he attempted to control the situation until the police arrived. The suspect attempted to leave the scene but was identified in the video and other evidence.
Lucknow Police acted quickly after the video became a popular topic online. A case was filed against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including assault upon a public servant for discharging his/her official duties, obstructing government work, and other offenses. A second charge was filed against the accused, and the accused was arrested and taken into custody for further legal proceedings.
The attack was condemned by senior police officials, who firmly condemned the attack and said violence against public servants to protect the safety and security of the public servants in their work will not be tolerated. They said police would not tolerate violence against public servants performing their functions, and people who were obstructing police and physically aggression towards law enforcement officers or physically attacking them in their official checks would face severe legal action against those who were not cooperating or abusing policemen.
The incident has reignited discussions about the increasing challenges faced by traffic police personnel throughout the country. Police officers are often working under incredibly stressful conditions in order to regulate traffic, enforce road safety laws, and respond to emergencies. Experts say that assaults on public officials not only endanger individual officers but also undermine the rule of law and discourage effective enforcement of traffic regulations.
In the days following the video’s circulation, many social media users voiced their support for the injured traffic officer and called for severe punishment of the culprit. Some people praised Lucknow Police’s quick action of taking swift action when they were notified of the incident, and others wished to know what kind of behavior the police officers and traffic police had shown them for not being respectful daily when they check traffic at the traffic stops.
Police are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with the police through inspections, document verification, and enforcement drives, and to work with officials in checking documents, documenting, and enforcing the law. Negotiations over traffic violations should be resolved according to legal principles, not through public conflict, violence, or disorder, they said.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are going through all the video footage and witness accounts to establish the sequence of events. If there is new evidence, more charges are probably to be added as is possible under the law.
For safety and smooth traffic management, respect for law enforcement officers is what matters. Anyone who attacks police personnel as they carry out their official duties will be punished with the full force of the law as well, said the police chief.
