Gurugram: Two workers were killed and two others were seriously injured after they were run over by a car while they were working on the Dwarka Expressway early today.
Gurugram Police said the accident took place around 2:30 a.m. near Sri Ram Chowk in New Palam Vihar, heightening the threat to workers doing work overnight roads and infrastructure projects.
The workers were installing grills along the Dwarka Expressway when the vehicle struck them, sources said. Four workers were injured from the vehicle, two of whom suffered fatal injuries and two of whom were seriously injured. Police and emergency services were notified about the incident and the injured workers were taken to medical facilities.
The accident happened in the early morning hours when visibility on roads can be low and traffic conditions can make roadside construction and maintenance work more hazardous. Grills and other infrastructure installation workers frequently work close to moving traffic and need to have sufficient safety measures, warning signs, lighting and traffic control measures in place to avoid accidents.
The incident in Sri Ram Chowk has brought to light the dangers faced by workers who are in charge of maintaining and developing road infrastructure in Gurugram region. The Dwarka Expressway is one of the major road corridors connecting Gurugram with Delhi and construction, maintenance and related infrastructure work is done on different locations along the route.
Gurugram Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision. Details of the vehicle in question, driver and the cause of the crash are expected to be unearthed during the course of the investigation. Police are also expected to look at the evidence on the accident site and understand how the vehicle entered the workers’ area.
The identities of the deceased and injured workers had not been included in the initial information released about the incident. Their families and colleagues are likely to wait for further information from the authorities on the circumstances of the crash.
Workers’ road accidents on construction and maintenance sites can have serious consequences if work is done at night. Barricades, reflective equipment, adequate lighting and clearly visible warnings are common measures to keep work zones away from moving traffic. The Gurugram incident has once again highlighted the necessity to keep track of the work zones and road safety measures in place at all times.
