The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches on Friday of some premises belonging to Mantri Developers and Builders in Mumbai.
The ED officials had conducted simultaneous raids at eight sites associated with the company from Delhi, it said. The searches started early in the morning and are ongoing, and investigators are looking for financial records and other documents.
Fraud and Money Laundering.
Mantri Developers, which has been accused of promising residential flats to customers through promises to deliver them at Delhi-based residential flats but never did so, among others, is alleged to have been involved in large-scale cash transactions which raise questions about illegal financial practices.
The ED suspects that money from buyers may have been diverted or sent through illegal channels, possibly including investment abroad. The allegations are money laundering crimes and therefore the ED is involved.
Not the First Action
The ED has taken action against the company before in 2022 and 2023. Assets worth about ₹300 crore of the company had been attached by the agency in the same investigation in 2023.
Mantri Developers is one of South India’s best real estate companies and has projects in major cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.
Ongoing Investigation
The present raids are the latest effort to obtain evidence and check for financial irregularities. Documents, transaction records and other materials are being examined to establish the flow of funds and detect any violations, officials said.
The government has so far said little about the results of the recent searches. But sources say they are trying to track the movement of funds and whether customers were misled.
Impact on Buyers
The case has caused homebuyers to worry that they have invested in projects of the company. Delayed or undelivered flats have also put customers in anxiety as well as consumers waiting to get clarity on the status of their investments.
If the results of the investigation are obtained, more action may take place. The ED’s crackdown shows that the government is still investigating financial fraud and holding real estate companies accountable.
