Who was Sir M. Visvesvaraya?
Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 in Muddenahalli, present-day Karnataka. He studied civil engineering after school and after that started public works career.
His expertise was in irrigation and water management engineering. The systems he designed to develop for better water storage, distribution and flood management were relevant for agricultural and urban development, particularly for the time period.
His career eventually extended beyond engineering projects. He played a key role in the growth of the princely state of Mysore and was its Diwan or chief minister from 1912 to 1918.

Visvesvaraya promoted industrialisation, education and economic development as a Diwan of Mysore. He was involved in several nationalised projects such as strengthening infrastructure and opportunities for technical education and industry in public service at the time.

He is thus often remembered by his work as one of the architects of modern Mysore.

Visvesvaraya's most prominent engineering work on automatic water-control systems and irrigation was his work.
His water management technology work illustrated how engineering could be used to solve practical problems in communities, agriculture and public infrastructure. Not only was his reputation gained through individual projects but also by the plan and efficiency, and the disciplined execution.
Bharat Ratna Honour
In 1955, Government awarded Visvesvaraya the Bharat Ratna for all he had done to the country, and we respect him for that. He lived until 1962 and was still a great figure of history.
