A 39-year-old woman has been arrested by Sarkhej police in Ahmedabad for the suicide of a 17-year-old Class XII student, after her relationship with the woman’s teenage son was allegedly put under extreme mental pressure. The arrest came after the girl’s family filed a complaint and CCTV footage of the girl’s residence was reviewed, Sarkhej police said.
According to the police complaint and reports published by The Times of India, the accused, Neha Gohil, went to the girl’s home on August 31 with her son. The teenager and Gohil’s son were classmates at a school in Ahmedabad’s Satellite area. Their families had heard of the students’ activity on social media around 6 months ago and had advised them to focus on their studies.
The situation escalated on August 29, when the two students were seen together at their school. The school principal contacted the girl’s parents, said the complaint. Gohil and her son next went to the teenager’s house two days later, when the girl’s parents were away at work.
The girl’s family later viewed CCTV recordings from their housing society with the society chairman. The CCTV also contained audio and captured an interaction between Gohil and the teenager lasting approximately 30 minutes, the complaint said. The family presented the material to police as part of their complaint.
The complainant alleged that Gohil repeatedly made statements telling the teenager to die if she truly loved her son. The complaint also alleged that the woman spoke about the possible effect of the relationship on her family’s reputation and indicated that she would return later to speak with the teenager’s family. Police are investigating these allegations and the recorded material as part of their investigation.
The teenager later that day died by suicide at her Sarkhej residence. Her family later said that the encounter caused her emotional distress and fear of social humiliation and that her family approached the police following the postmortem and funeral.
Sarkhej police registered a case under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment of suicide of a child. Police arrested Gohil on September 13, and the complaint and CCTV footage were part of the material considered in the investigation, said the latest reports.
The case is still under investigation and the allegations against Gohil have not been established in court. CCTV and audio recording, family members’ and other witnesses’ accounts and the circumstances around the confrontation will be examined by investigators. The legal responsibility of the accused will ultimately depend on the evidence collected during the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
The incident has also brought to light the stresses of relationships for teenagers in that families, schools and young people all have different expectations. The police investigation will look at whether Gohil’s reported confrontation and statements constitute abetment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
