A road accident at the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway killed four family members after the car they were riding in reversed on the high-speed highway and was struck by another vehicle. The tragic accident has once again laid bare the dangers of reversing or stopping on expressways, which are highways where cars go fast, and they can't react in time to sudden obstacles.
According to initial information, as the family was travelling on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, the driver realized that they had missed an exit or had taken a wrong route. Instead of going to the next designated exit, the vehicle started reversing on the expressway, which is extremely dangerous on controlled access highways.
Investigators discovered that the car was moving in reverse and entered the path of a speeding vehicle coming from behind. The driver of the oncoming car had little time to react and collided with it so hard, according to witnesses. The impact was so severe that the family’s vehicle was destroyed at once and the occupants were trapped in it.
Emergency services and highway patrol teams rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information about the accident. Rescue workers worked to pull the victims out of the mangled vehicle, but all four were declared dead because of their injuries.
The identities of the victims have not been released until family members have been informed of their deaths, a law enforcement official said. The deceased were several members of the same family, who were travelling together at the time of the crash, officials said.
Police have already filed a case and begun an investigation into the cause of the accident. CCTV footage from the expressway is being collected to establish the cause of the accident, and witness accounts are being gathered.
It’s well known that reversing on an expressway is one of the most dangerous driving violations. Expressways, unlike city roads, are designed for uninterrupted, fast-paced traffic. Vehicles moving fast enough on highways can require a considerable distance to stop safely, and sudden obstacles or unexpected vehicle movements can be fatal.
Controlled-access highways have exits, service roads, and turnaround points that work to prevent drivers from taking risks when they miss a specific route. Motorists are advised to go straight to the next exit and not reverse, turn illegally, or stop abruptly on the road.
The accident caused road traffic to be temporarily affected as authorities cordoned off the affected stretch so that rescue personnel could carry out rescue work and clear up the debris. Traffic police diverted vehicles and tried to restore normal movement as the investigation continued.
The tragedy has inspired a lot of discussion on social media and among road safety advocates who have called for better awareness campaigns about safe driving on expressways. Although modern highways have improved connectivity and decreased travel time, driver education is also crucial to prevent accidents.
A traffic police chief told motorists to observe traffic rules and navigation systems and not panic if they miss an exit. Highway officials said no destination is worth risking lives with dangerous driving decisions.
As the investigation goes on, other factors like speed, visibility, road conditions, and driver error are expected to be investigated as possible reasons for the collision. Meanwhile, the tragic loss of a whole family is a reminder of the importance of road safety on India’s expanding network of expressways.
