A tragic incident in Haryana’s Faridabad has claimed the life of a 3-year-old girl after she fell into an open borewell in Sihi village. Neha, who was a child, was trapped in the borewell after falling while playing in the area near the borewell, her rescuers said.
The rescue operation by the NDRF, Haryana State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, fire services and medical personnel took a number of hours to extract her and take her to hospital. She died but doctors confirmed her death after the rescue operation.
According to reports, the incident occurred Sunday evening when Neha was playing with other children near her home. A tractor was parked close to the borewell and the kids were playing around, and Neha slipped and fell into the open shaft, the news report said. Then other children raised an alarm, neighbours and family members rushed to the spot and informed the authorities.
The incident triggered an overnight emergency response. Police and local officials got to the scene, followed by rescue personnel and other agencies. NDRF and SDRF teams worked with the fire department, medical personnel and local administration to reach the child. Rescue workers used lighting equipment and a camera to look at conditions inside the borewell and tried to get to the child. Oxygen was also provided during the rescue operation, the report said.
After about 10 hours of efforts, rescue workers pulled Neha out of the borewell in the early hours of Monday. She was taken to the hospital immediately for treatment. But despite the emergency and medical care, the child could not be saved. India Today reported that the girl died during the long rescue operation, while the BBC also reported that she was declared dead after treatment.
The tragedy has reignited the issue of abandoned or uncovered borewells in homes and towns. Based on reports, the borewell involved in the incident was a municipal borewell and had been lying unused for some years. Some said it had been previously covered but the cover was missing before the accident.
What caused the uncovered borewell will be investigated now as the shaft is left open and where children live and play is likely to be questioned. Open borewells are particularly dangerous and should be sealed or covered properly.
The rescue operation was going on throughout the night and Sihi village residents are in distress. Emergency teams worked in tough conditions to find and reach the child and family members were waiting for news. The death has raised questions about the maintenance and monitoring of unused civic infrastructure.
Borewell accidents involving children have previously led to debates on safety regulations and the duty of authorities and property owners to secure unused shafts. The Faridabad incident has brought that again into focus - namely, because the borewell was located in a residential area.

But the whole rescue operation ended in tragedy for the family. Neha was rescued after hours of efforts, but medical treatment was not able to save her life. The tragedy has left the local community grieving, and it has also made people more vigilant about abandoned borewells and other open shafts.
This Faridabad tragedy is once more a reminder of the danger that occurs if borewells are not well secured. As authorities investigate the reasons behind the incident, accountability, infrastructure safety and other measures that would be taken to prevent other incidents resulting in children’s deaths are expected to be the most important.
