The political battle for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election has already started to draw a lot of attention and there is now a survey of opinion polls to predict the reality of how the election campaign will look like now.
An opinion poll conducted jointly by News Leader and Matrize, across all 403 Assembly constituencies of Uttar Pradesh, gives the BJP-led alliance 267 seats and the Samajwadi Party-led alliance 132 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party is predicted to obtain two seats, while two seats are assigned to others. Note that the figures are survey estimates and not actual election results.
Uttar Pradesh is still one of the most politically significant states in India because of its 403-member Legislative Assembly and the huge influence it has on national politics. A party or alliance needs 202 seats to win a simple majority of the House.
The News Leader-Matrize projection puts the BJP-led alliance above that threshold with 267 seats. So the survey suggests that if projections are to be taken as the actual results, the alliance will reach the majority mark. However, opinion polls are snapshots of voter sentiment at a given point in time and can drastically change before polling occurs.
According to the survey results in News Leader and Matrize, the BJP will win 246 seats alone. Its potential allies are Apna Dal (Soneylal) with nine seats, Rashtriya Lok Dal with seven seats, Nishad Party with four seats and other allies with one seat. This will take the total alliance to 267. The Samajwadi Party will acquire 125 seats and Congress 7 seats, while other parties will take 7 seats. Other parties in the alliance will account for further seats, and the SP-led alliance will have 132 seats. BSP will win 2 seats and other parties 2 seats.
The projection is especially interesting when compared with the 2022 Assembly election. In this election, BJP won 255 seats on its own, while Samajwadi Party won 111. BJP allies Apna Dal (Soneylal) and Nishad Party won 12 and 6 seats respectively, thus bringing the total number of seats in the BJP-led alliance to 273. The SP's allies also contributed seats, and the SP-led alliance finished with 125 seats according to alliance calculations. Congress won two seats and BSP one.
The News Leader-Matrize projection thus suggests a somewhat different distribution compared with the 2022 result. The BJP's projected list of 246 seats is less than the 255 in 2022 and the SP's expected 125 seats, compared with the 111 in 2022. In alliance terms, the survey projects 267 seats for the BJP-led alliance as compared with 273 in 2022 and 132 seats for the SP-led alliance compared with 125 in 2022. This suggests a smaller projected gap between the two major alliance blocs in the survey, despite the fact that the BJP-led alliance remains above the majority in the survey.
The survey also indicates the continuing importance of the BJP alliance structure in Uttar Pradesh. Rather than looking only at the BJP's own tally, the 267-seat projection for SP comprises contributions from its partners. The SP projection is also presented as part of a wider alliance structure involving Congress and other partners. This distinction is important because elections in Uttar Pradesh are constituency-by-constituency, and changes in alliance arrangements, candidate selection, local issues and vote transfers can affect the final seat distribution.
For the Samajwadi Party, the projection of 125 seats for the party itself would represent an increase over its 111 seats in 2022. The Congress will also increase from its two seats in the last Assembly election to 7 in the News Leader-Matrize projection. At the same time, the BSP is estimated to have only two seats, as compared to one seat in 2022. The numbers indicate the way the survey is currently assessing the relative rank of the main political formations but not at all a certain outcome.
The wider political picture also makes the 2027 contest significant. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh saw a different seat distribution than the 2022 Assembly elections, with the Samajwadi Party and Congress performing well in parliamentary constituencies. In recent political reporting, we have also seen an increase in the activity of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the BJP in areas where the opposition performed very well in 2024.
As for voters and political observers, the key takeaway from the News Leader-Matrize survey is the projected movement in individual party numbers rather than just the alliance headline. The BJP-led alliance is projected at 246 seats and SP at 125, while the SP-led alliance is projected at 267 seats and the BJP-led alliance at 132. How stable these numbers will be will depend on what's happening during the campaign, alliance negotiations, candidate selection, local issues and voter preferences closer to polling.
Finally, the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election has not been held, and an opinion poll cannot provide us with an accurate picture. The News Leader-Matrize survey provides one early snapshot of the political landscape, showing a projected majority for the BJP-led alliance while also indicating an increase in the projected SP tally compared with 2022. More surveys, campaign developments and ultimately the actual votes will determine how accurately these predictions do or don't come true.
