A 16-year-old Class 11 student died Tuesday after jumping from the third floor of a school building in Faridabad, Haryana. Her father has expressed concern that she might have carried out the action after she was punished at school. Police have said they are investigating but family members believe it is a tragedy that is far too late for her.
The incident took place at Navodaya Vidya Niketan Senior Secondary School in Faridabad. Janvi, the family said, was at school when the incident took place. She was rushed to a private hospital after the fall and was admitted to BK Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
The girl’s father Pramod Kumar has expressed concern over the events that allegedly took place before his daughter died. Janvi had been punished after eating biryani at school and was told to stand outside the classroom under the sun, he said.

Kumar said information provided by Janvi’s friends indicated that the students had eaten biryani at school before the alleged punishment. He said his daughter later went to the vice-principal’s room and remained there for nearly two hours, according to CCTV footage reviewed by the family.
Kumar questioned what happened during the period his daughter was in the room. He claimed that CCTV footage shows Janvi entering the vice-principal’s room at around 11 am and coming out nearly two hours later. She was seen leaving and returning to the room on some occasions before finally coming out and going towards the third floor, he said.
The father said Janvi later climbed up to the third floor of the school building and jumped. He has questioned whether she had been punished or other distressing things before the incident. The family's version is based on those allegations and the incident is under investigation.
The father of the student also accused the school administration of not informing the family of what had taken place early on. Kumar said the school had contacted him right away when his daughter was ill or had another problem to deal with. But he claimed that the family was not immediately notified of the incident.
He also claimed that school administration did not meet the family at the hospital. Kumar accused the institution of trying to hide its deficiencies and asked for the circumstances of his daughter's death to be investigated carefully.
The school administration has disputed some of the allegations made by the family. The school principal, RK Sharma, said that the student had gone to a washroom on the third floor. Kumar rebuffed this explanation and again raised questions about the CCTV footage and his daughter's time inside the vice-principal's room.
Police officials said that there is an investigation into the matter. Station House Officer Sumir Singh said no formal complaint had been made to register an FIR at the time of the initial investigation.
According to police, investigators had not found anything suspicious in the CCTV footage or any suspicious activity at the school so far. The officer also said there was no evidence before the police to support claims that the student had been punished for several hours.
A post-mortem examination is ongoing and hence further action is likely to follow based on the findings of the investigation and medical report. The family has called for a detailed inquiry and has reportedly demanded that the post-mortem examination be conducted at AIIMS.
That same incident has also led to accusations from a parent of the school. That parent, whose children had studied there, said the school had a history of imposing harsh punishments on students. Children had previously been forced to stand in the sun and humiliated and physically punished, the parent said. This could not be independently established in the information available.
The death of the class 11 student has raised concerns about student safety, disciplinary practices and communication between schools and parents. CCTV footage, witness accounts, medical findings and other evidence should be reviewed to establish the sequence of events.
The family is still seeking answers on what happened to Janvi in the hours before her death, as the post-mortem and police investigation continues. Authorities will take action if evidence and findings that emerge from the investigation are followed.
