FBI Probe Links Punjab SHO to Alleged $400,000 Extortion Plot Involving Jailed Gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria

The FBI has accused a Punjab Station House Officer (SHO) of being behind a $400,000 extortion scheme aimed at local gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and investigators have linked it to jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.

Such allegations raised the prospect of law enforcement connections being used to pressure players in organized crime-related activity.

According to the report, the Punjab police officer was involved in the recruitment of people to accept large financial payments and used his position and access to sensitive information to support the supposed extortion effort.

Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, a known figure in Punjab’s organized crime scene, is now in jail. Bhagwanpuria, who is currently in jail, has been linked to many crimes through Indian authorities.

Now investigators are trying to determine if he has tried to have people involved in crime follow him on the outside.

The FBI’s involvement indicates the investigation is international in scope. When financial transactions, criminal networks and people from different jurisdictions are involved, authorities work together across borders and can be very productive.

They will try to establish the whole chain of events, identify all participants and determine the extent of any alleged coordination.

The police officer investigation has also raised questions about accountability and internal monitoring of law enforcement agencies.

Public trust and the credibility of institutions of law and order that are in charge of police work can be undermined by cooperation between criminals and officials, experts say.

Punjab authorities will investigate the allegations and take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.

Any of the accused persons will have the fundamental right to respond to the allegations through legal proceedings and charges would need to be made in court.

The investigation is ongoing and more details are still pending as investigators collect evidence. The investigation is to get to the bottom of the extortion attempt itself and what else could have a role, officials said.

It is not surprising that the case is still under investigation by law enforcement and allegations of corruption or criminal cooperation in the official system of justice are not surprising.
