Congress-linked political commentator Tehseen Poonawalla has posted another social media post saying Delhi Police warned him of strict legal action over remarks concerning the sugar industry and the government’s ethanol-blending policy.
Poonawalla addressed the Delhi Police and referred to sugarcane juice in his post. He referred to the sugar scam as one of the most debilitating scams in India and claimed political connections were being used to benefit the families of influential leaders.
Poonawalla also raised concern about the price of sugar paid by ordinary consumers. He said politicians’ sons are millionaires and the public is paying higher prices. These are serious political allegations, and they should be treated as claims unless backed by documentary evidence or official findings.
Much of his post also took into account E20 fuel, which has up to 20% ethanol in addition to petrol. India has been steadily increasing ethanol blending as part of its efforts to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower emissions and support domestic agricultural production.
But E20 has also raised concerns among some vehicle owners, as well as compatibility with older vehicles, fuel efficiency and the effect on some of the engine components over the long term. Poonawalla said the policy is hurting vehicle owners and linked it to the wider sugar industry conversation.
The post became more serious when Poonawalla said Delhi Police had warned him of strict legal action. He spoke about Saturday and said he would have difficulty getting bail if arrested. He said he would not run away and would face the situation.
His comments are within a context of ongoing public and political debates about ethanol blending, sugar production and the use of sugarcane for ethanol production. Ethanol is a key component of India’s energy policy and sugar mills and farmers are key players in that industry.
The allegations in the post, however, do not in themselves prove a “sugar scam” exists or that political families have improperly benefited from the industry. Any such claims would need to be investigated and backed up by a competent authority.

The Sugar Scam is the most bitter Scam in INDIA !
Making sons of netas become millionaires while the commin citizen pays more for Sugar & due to E20 their vehicles are destroyed!!@OGTeamBharat @Nidhzee @FactswithDinesh… pic.twitter.com/5ct1BqKFra
In the same spirit, concerns about E20 will need to be understood separately from the rest of the sugar industry. Vehicle compatibility depends on the model, manufacturing year and specifications provided by the manufacturer.
Poonawalla ended with a defiant message in the post, saying he was prepared to face the consequences of his statements and reaffirming his commitment to India with the words “Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.”
The development could lead to a new round of online debate on the difference between political criticism, legal action and public debate on India’s ethanol policy.
