'Flying Thief' in Rajasthan: Pigeon Steals ₹1 Lakh Gold Chain from Nagaur Jewellery Shop

A pigeon had a major security scare in the bustling bullion market of Degana town, as the story unfolds like an action sequence from *Bollywood comedy*. Under a jeweller's nose, the bird managed to ‘heist’ a gold chain, weighing around 7 grams and valued at roughly ₹1 lakh.

The "Heist" at Rameshwar Plaza

This event took place at a jewellery business in the Rameshwar Plaza in Degana bullion market. It was around noon on Thursday, and a craftsman by the name of Samin Bengali was at work on the upper floor of the shop putting the finishing touches on a newly crafted gold chain.

Suddenly a pigeon flew through an open window and perched near the workbench. Before the startled artisan could react, the bird snagged the shiny gold chain in its beak and flew off, retreating the same way.

Panic in the Bullion Market

When news of the “theft” began circulating, it sparked a panic and confusion among the local traders. With gold prices up just this week, losing even a tiny ornament is a massive monetary hit. “We’ve got all types of thefts but when you have a pigeon stealing gold this market is new to us a first!” said a local trader. “The owner simply felt aghast; he just noticed his month’s profit really flew out the window.”

Dozens of shopkeepers and onlookers formed in the streets, watching the bird as it flew and searching for prey. The pigeon landed on the roof of a building in the market and spent many minutes there, apparently unfazed by the clamor below.

The Recovery

Concerned that the bird may drop the chain into a gutter or fly off to a more inaccessible location some traders made sure to carefully climb onto the roof. When the pigeon tried to escape from the men, it shook its head so that it pulled the gold chain from its beak. The chain fell onto a roof and was instantly drawn back by the relieved jeweller who was so relaxed felt. In addition to a few slight scratches, the ornament had come in good condition.

New Security Concerns

However, it prompted a serious discussion by the Degana Sarrafa Association about shop security although the incident ultimately ended on a joking note. Some other traders said jokingly that although human thieves will come knocking, they also joked they are ready to install bird-proof mesh and grills to keep their prized product safe from the menace posed by what a “aerial squad.”
