Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Shriprakash Jaiswal passed away on Friday at the age of 81 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The senior politician, who had been battling a prolonged illness, was a three-time Member of Parliament (MP) from the Kanpur constituency and a prominent face of the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh for decades.
A Distinguished Political Career
Born on September 25, 1944, Jaiswal's political journey began in local governance when he was elected as the Mayor of Kanpur in 1989. This victory significantly elevated his stature and paved the way for his entry into national politics.
He was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Kanpur in 1999 and was re-elected in 2004 and 2009. His tenure as a Union Minister under the UPA government was marked by key responsibilities:
- Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs (2004-2009): He was actively involved in internal security issues during this period.
- Minister of Coal (2011-2014): He held this key portfolio, which saw him focus on coal sector reforms.
Jaiswal also served as the President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 2000 to 2002. Throughout his political life, he was known for his grounded and simple demeanor, enjoying respect across various political lines. Old-timers recall his focus on regional development, with significant contributions to Kanpur's infrastructure, including initiatives like the operation of the Shram Shakti Express train between Kanpur and New Delhi.
Condolences and Legacy
His condition deteriorated suddenly before his passing, and he was declared dead upon arrival at the Laxmipat Singhania Institute of Cardiology in Kanpur due to heart-related complications.
Tributes have poured in from political leaders across the spectrum. UP Congress President Ajay Rai condoled his death, saying, "His contribution to the politics of Kanpur cannot be forgotten. But more than that, he will be remembered for his brotherly demeanor and as a grounded and simple person." Other senior leaders from Congress and other parties also offered their heartfelt condolences, mourning the loss of a seasoned statesman.
Shriprakash Jaiswal leaves behind a legacy of public service, regional development, and a long association with the Indian National Congress. The final rites are expected to be performed on Saturday.
