The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart after receiving several consumer complaints of expired, spoiled and unsafe food products being shipped through the quick-commerce platform.
According to the food regulator, the notices were issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, after consumers were reported to have received food items which were expired, rotten, contaminated or otherwise unfit for consumption. The FSSAI also said that a number of complainants were unsatisfied with the response they got despite repeatedly asking the company for answers.
According to the report, the regulator ordered Swiggy Instamart to produce an explanation and compliance report and also to explain its action if they were to respond properly to it and send a detailed explanation and compliance report, and to respond correctly, and with a strict policy-based action if they fail to comply, the company would be put in place if they didn’t respond in a way to that response, according to X.

Products Flagged In Consumer Complaints
The FSSAI listed some products that were the subject of complaints.
Healthify 100% Whey Protein (1 kg) and Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts were allegedly supplied after their expiry dates.
Consumers also pointed out that Akshayakalpa Organic Eggs were in an expired and rotten state with a bad smell and indicative of contamination, and they were not fit for consumption. This issue hasn’t been resolved, the regulator said.
Another complaint was Kakke da Paratha, which was allegedly delivered in a spoiled condition with a foul odour.
The regulator also highlighted a complaint of an infant food formulation allegedly being in a very deteriorated and unsafe condition due to suspected contamination and improper storage. The complaint also claimed the same defective product was supplied again after the original item had been returned.
Licensing Concerns Raised
Apart from food quality issues, the FSSAI also mentioned alleged irregularities in licensing.
The notices mention concerns over incorrect, invalid or non-existent FSSAI licence numbers, as well as food business operators whose names are not known to them as registered FSSAI records.
The regulator has asked Swiggy Instamart for clarification for these issues as it is a compliance review.
Legal Action Possible
The FSSAI has asked the company to respond with detailed information on all the observations made in the notices. Failure to provide a satisfactory explanation and compliance report could bring further action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, it says.
As of now, Swiggy Instamart has not publicly commented on the latest notices.
This is happening as online food delivery and quick-commerce platforms are more closely regulated by regulators in terms of food safety, storage standards and consumer protection.
