A renewed surge in fuel prices as jet fuel, premium petrol, and diesel escalate also as the geopolitical frictions in Iran continue to hammer global energy markets.

These revisions were drawn as crude oil is being weighed down by supply challenges to key shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest chokepoints for oil trading.

Premium Petrol Prices See Hike

As of 2016, oil marketers have started increasing the price of premium-grade petrol products such as XP95, Speed, and Power by around ₹2-₹2.35 per litre. But we are still seeing regular petrol prices come in very little, most likely because it suits them well at present time to not get too much attention from customers.

Diesel Prices Under Pressure

Though retail diesel prices in India are not as robust in this larger national volume-driven trend as is, industrial and bulk diesel prices are rising considerably. Pressure in these markets, as ever, could, one wonders the degree on which retail diesel rates will escalate as the future gets tighter and harder to predict.

Diesel prices have risen sharply globally because of the conflict, with sharp increases in some countries because of supply fears; they are also now significantly higher from the war’s beginning, even above the war in Syria.

Jet Fuel Costs Spike

Jet fuel prices (oil prices heavily sensitive to oil fluctuations) in all parts of the world have soared. There are high airlines in which aviation fuel costs have exploded—and airlines needed alternatives (fare jumps and capacity cuts).

For airlines, fuel costs account for most of the operating cost, so even very small increases can be significant in changing ticket prices.

Why Prices Are Rising

The Iran conflict has upended global supply chains and left experts scared of the loss of oil in West Asia. With crude oil prices climbing above $100 per barrel in recent weeks, oil drillers and distributors will have to absorb more of their costs.

Diesel and commercial fuel businesses face increased operating costs. The cost of jet fuel will also cause an increase in airfares. Premium fuel buyers will face the most impact at petrol pumps. The pressure on inflation rises as fuel prices go up.

Even on global trends, the Indian government has made efforts to diversify oil imports and keep the supply security level as a whole and has kept the price of petrol and diesel from falling sharply in line with those in other countries.

What to Expect Next

Fuel prices will be volatile going forward due to the West Asia situation, but very much at the hands of West Asia. A further rise could force more increases from all fuels.

Although at current levels, the impact is not complete and the warning signs are well known—global conflicts are still affecting consumers at the fuel pump.
