An important disciplinary action has been initiated in Karnataka’s Uttar Kannada district after a video on YouTube that allegedly shows a former rowdy-sheeter misbehaving with police personnel and physically assaulting them, while the officer in charge took no action against him.
The incident, which took place in Haliyal town, has fuelled widespread criticism of the local police and quick action by district authorities. Following an internal review, Haliyal Police Station PSI Basavaraj Madanoor has been suspended, and eight police officers attached to the station have been transferred.
The action was ordered by Uttar Kannada Superintendent of Police Deepan after the video of the incident got traction on social media and drew public attention.
According to initial information, the accused, a former rowdy-sheeter Mach Manja, was inebriated and created a disturbance. Residents reported the situation to police, and police arrived at the site to control the situation, the report said.
But when the accused allegedly became aggressive when he saw the police team. Witnesses and reports suggest that he verbally abused police personnel using objectionable language and allegedly assaulted some of the officers at the scene.
A video of the incident also appeared online and quickly went viral. The video apparently shows the accused confronting police personnel and creating a commotion in public. But worse was the station’s PSI’s alleged inaction during the incident.
Police sources say PSI Basavaraj Madanoor remained in the police jeep and did not come out to help his staff in the midst of the fight. The viral footage and subsequent reports have raised questions about leadership and the handling of the situation by the officer in charge.
The failure of the PSI to act while his subordinates were being abused and assaulted has aroused widespread anger among police and the public. Why was action not taken against the accused even though there was law enforcement personnel at the scene?
After taking note of the incident and seeing the evidence, SP Deepan ordered departmental action. The suspension of the PSI and transfer of eight police personnel are seen as a strong message about accountability within the police force.
Police officers’ morale and action against those who obstruct or assault police officers are of utmost importance to maintain public order and confidence in the policing system, officials have said.
The incident has also revived the debate about police officers’ problems dealing with habitual offenders and individuals with criminal backgrounds. Experts say that leadership and cooperation are required in the event of escalation, for both the officers and the public.
