As India gears up to celebrate its 80th Independence Day, the Tricolour is once again at the centre of the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 campaign.
The initiative encourages citizens to display the Indian National Flag at their homes and participate in activities celebrating national pride and unity. The 2026 campaign will be held from August 9 to August 17 and will cover Independence Day on August 15.
The campaign was started in 2022 as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and has been developed into a nationwide citizen participation movement.
This year's campaign also has special significance since it is the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.
Citizens can display the Tiranga in their home, participate in community events, and share their participation through the official Har Ghar Tiranga platform.
How do you hoist the Tiranga at home?
The National Flag is more than a ceremonial display. The Tricolour is to be handled and displayed with dignity and in accordance with the provisions of the Flag Code of India, 2002 and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.

Use a good national flag.
The national flag must have a rectangular shape with a 3:2 length-to-width ratio.
After amendments to the Flag Code, the permitted materials include hand-spun and hand-woven or machine-made cotton, polyester, wool, silk, and khadi bunting.

We should never show the Tricolour upside down.
When the flag is displayed horizontally, the saffron band must be at the top, followed by white and green.
The flag should be properly oriented before hoisting it.
Give the National Flag a Position of Honour
The Indian National Flag should be in a position of honour when it is displayed.
It should not be displayed in a manner that diminishes its dignity or gives another flag a superior position on the same masthead.
Do Not Allow the Flag to Touch the Ground.
The national flag should never touch the ground or the floor.
It shouldn’t be left to trail in water. Citizens should have good arrangements to securely display the flag without damaging it.
Do Not Use the Tiranga as Decoration
The National Flag should not be used as a decorative item, festoon, rosette or bunting.
While Har Ghar Tiranga encourages citizens to display the flag, the Tricolour must always be treated as the National Flag rather than as a decoration.
Do Not Display a Damaged Flag
A torn, damaged, soiled or dishevelled National Flag should not be displayed.
The flag should be clean and in good condition before it is put up; citizens should ensure this.
Is there a fixed time to hoist the flag?
One of the most common questions around Independence Day is whether households must hoist the Tiranga at a particular time.
For members of the public who display the National Flag in their homes, there is no general government-mandated fixed clock time like 8 AM or 9 AM for hoisting the flag.
The Flag Code allows the National Flag displayed on the house of a member of the public to be flown day and night.
Therefore, households participating in Har Ghar Tiranga do not have to follow a specific morning hoisting time just because it is Independence Day.
Public buildings can be different. The Flag Code allows the National Flag to fly on public buildings from sunrise to sunset, subject to the applicable provisions.
Can the Tiranga be flown at night?
Indeed, the National Flag can be flown at night at the house of a member of the public.
This provision is one that is still unknown to many.
After the 2022 amendment to the Flag Code, when the National Flag is displayed in the open or on the house of a member of the public, it may be flown day and night.
However, citizens must continue to ensure that the flag is displayed respectfully and is not damaged or improperly positioned.
For public buildings, the relevant provisions regarding display from sunrise to sunset still apply.
How does one participate in the Har Ghar Tiranga 2026?
Citizens can join in the campaign by displaying the Tiranga at home and participating in local and community-level programmes.
The official campaign platform also allows citizens to share their participation by uploading a selfie with the Tiranga.
The portal provides information on the campaign and participation, including the options for generating a participation certificate.
The campaign does not stop at individual households. There are also rallies, cultural events, exhibitions, and musical events to include as part of the entire national celebrations.
A special MP bike rally is scheduled in Delhi on August 12, and the campaign will conclude with a musical concert in New Delhi on August 17.
