Haryana Hospital Incident Sparks Outrage After CCTV Captures Doctor Allegedly Assaulting Elderly Patient

One shocking case from Haryana has erupted into rage after CCTV footage of the doctor allegedly assaulting an elderly patient on a hospital ward aired. But it immediately prompted a slew of serious questions about patient safety, medical ethics and accountability in health care homes the video widely promoted in online forums. The surveillance camera apparently revealed the doctor had entered the room of an aged patient, an officer was reportedly told. And moments later, the doctor is observed carefully yanking the curtains shut to the side of the bed effectively blocking the camera’s view.

But the footage still contains some film as to how the doctor does the following the doctor strikes the patient in the chest with his elbow. This obscuring of the pictures was enough to raise much more viewer’s red flags. So many questioned whether they could have been closing the curtains to avoid being recorded. The attack was quickly followed by criticism of the doctor himself and the hospital itself, too.

Health care workers are ethically bound by responsibilities that prioritize the safety, care and security of the patient first. This is, and will remain a breach of the principles above, which is considered, utterly at odds with these aforementioned principles.

Under Indian law, such actions could bring the very serious punishment of criminal or medical regulatory consequences. Physically assaulting a patient  especially the elderly  may be grounds for suspension of medical license, criminal charges or disciplinary justice. The hospital management has also been criticised.

Critics say it’s a collective obligation to stand up for safety and that all the institutions have to have strong monitoring and grievance-healing systems. CCTV was an important factor in determining what had occurred, but whether it could have prevented the incidents while they were unfolding in real time.

A quick and fierce public response has followed. There are calls, echoing from social media for severe consequences for the doctor accused of wrongdoing; medical credentials are now threatened with arrest along with cancellation. There has also been a broad chorus of calls for a transparent investigation and a stricter guardrail that would help prevent future events of that kind. That kind of case is emblematic of a larger problem in health care systems a power disparity between patients and providers. Elderly patients especially are the most vulnerable, who rely on medical staff for their care and protection only.

Such incidents erode the confidence of the public, provoking a frightened patient and his/her family. We have no idea yet whether authorities will go through with a full legal investigation. The doctor faces serious legal and professional implications if guilty.

Meanwhile, health care providers around the country could also rekindle attempts to improve oversight or mandate harder ethical guidelines. Haryana case is just one more example of how professionalism and humanity must be at the heart of the practice of medicine even as it takes a careful look into the case. To breach that trust does not only endanger individual victims; it endangers the health system as a whole.
