Tightened security at the Shambhu border on Tuesday as Haryana Police closed the main Punjab-Haryana crossing to prevent protesters from travelling towards Delhi to perform a proposed Mahapanchayat.
Visible from the border was a huge police presence, multiple layers of barricades and more safety measures as groups of protesters from Punjab gathered on the border. The police monitored the situation closely to maintain law and order and control movement along the interstate route on a daily basis.

The preventive measures were taken in preparation for large numbers of protesters who were expected to arrive in Haryana on their way to the national capital, said officials. Police personnel were in full strength, and barricades and security checks were put in place to control the situation and prevent any untoward incidents.
At the Punjab-Haryana border, many protesters were stopped, and police shut down the movement of some protesters as police restricted further movement towards Delhi. This led to lengthy lines of policemen’s restrictions and a lack of freedom of movement at the border as demonstrators pleaded for permission to enter Delhi and asked to travel on to Delhi.
The Mahapanchayat has been called by protesting groups to raise various issues on agriculture and other public concerns. The gathering, in their words, is to make demands and to reach out to the wider public.
On the other hand, Haryana administration officials say the security measures are precautionary and are intended to protect public safety, stop traffic disruption and keep law and order. Protesters have been told to work with law enforcement or avoid any action that could incite unrest.
Shambhu border remained a focal point of farmer protests in recent years and witnessed demonstrations and talks between the farmer unions and government representatives. Due to its proximity to the Punjab-Haryana route, it is often a key point to move towards Delhi at large protests.
These developments are coming as farmers' groups and protest groups are getting more mobilized and want agricultural reforms and a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).
