Thousands of farmers gathered at Shambhu Border on the Patiala side of Punjab ahead of their proposed march to New Delhi, as the security forces stepped up control measures to keep order in place and to maintain public order. The proposed march to Delhi has been organized by various farmer unions that say they will press the government for the fulfillment of long-standing demands they have made. Among those farmers are a legal guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, debt relief for farmers, pension benefits for farmers and fair compensation for crop losses, and other reforms for the country’s agricultural sector.
