Delhi Police have now registered a case of abetment of suicide for him and are investigating the death of this student in the vicinity of AIIMS.

The case has brought to light the circumstances of the scholar’s death and the events prior to his hospitalization. Based on information available, the student was found unconscious and injured at his rented residence in Munirka on August 18. He was taken to AIIMS and medical treatment was carried out for a number of weeks. Despite treatment, he died on October 3.

Police have launched an investigation after a complaint was made of abetment of suicide. The registration of a case allows investigators to investigate what could have caused the incident and whether it was any individual or other factor.

At this point in time, the issues raised in the complaint are being investigated and no conclusions about responsibility can be drawn until the police investigation has been completed.

PhD Scholar found injured at Munirka Accommodation

The incident started on August 18, when the IIT Delhi scholar was found unconscious and injured at the rented accommodation where he was staying in Munirka, an area in south Delhi. The circumstances in which he was found led to his hospitalization at AIIMS.

He remained in the hospital for about 45 days before his death on October 3. The length of hospitalization indicates the severity of the injuries sustained in the August incident, although the exact medical details and circumstances surrounding them will be part of the investigation and medical examination.

The death has now led to a police case based on a complaint alleging abetment of suicide. Evidence, statements and other elements of the scholar's life will be reviewed to determine what was there before the scholar was discovered injured.

Police Investigation Underway

Cases of alleged abetment of suicide require investigators to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deceased person's actions and the events that may have preceded them. Family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours and other people who may have had relevant information may be interviewed by detectives for their involvement.

The investigators can also analyze the material evidence related to the incident (mails, text messages and other records) relevant to the case. The purpose of the investigation is to establish a factual sequence of events and determine if the allegations made in the complaint are supported by evidence.

The fact that an abetment of suicide case has been registered does not by itself mean that a particular person is responsible. Any allegations against individuals must be investigated and supported by evidence before responsibility can be determined.

Focus on the Circumstances of Death

The scholar’s death after a long time of treatment raised questions about the August 18 incident. What could be the cause of the scholar’s unconsciousness and injuries and what events or interactions could have preceded it?

Police will need to establish the timeline between the incident at the rented accommodation and the scholar’s death at AIIMS, as the investigation unfolds. Medical records and other evidence may also help investigators understand the nature of the injuries and the circumstances of his lengthy hospitalization.

The case also illustrates the difficulties investigators face when a person is injured and survives for a long time. They need to go through other sources (hospital records, statements from people involved in the case, etc.) to establish a timeline.

The scholar’s death after nearly six weeks of hospitalization is a tragic outcome for the family. The police investigation will establish the facts surrounding the incident and examine the allegations made in the complaint.

At this stage, the case is still under investigation. Police will continue to collect evidence and record statements on the alleged abetment of suicide. Any conclusions on the cause of the incident or involvement of other people will be made based on what is found in the investigation.
