IIT-Delhi has once again managed to emerge as India's top-ranking institute in the QS World University Rankings 2027 by moving up five spots to claim the 118th place in the rankings while securing the best-ever rating for an Indian institute in the globally recognized index.
The QS World University Rankings 2027 by QS Quacquarelli Symonds also points to the rising influence of India in global higher education, as India features 52 universities in the rankings. It makes India the fifth most-represented higher education system in the world and sees a massive 271% growth over seven years from 14 institutes in 2017, being the fastest among all the G20 countries. These rankings speak about the ongoing change in the higher education system in India, where out of the 52 Indian institutions which made it to the list, 26 have improved their standings, nine have maintained their rank, 15 have dropped, while two made it to the list for the first time. Over half of the previously ranked universities have improved their ranking, indicating the rising international recognition of Indian academic institutions.
Appreciating this success, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted the transformative effect of the reforms being brought about through NEP 2020.
"India's strong showing in global university rankings showcases the transformative power of NEP 2020 with 52 universities from across 19 states/UTs getting ranked and over half making improvements. As our institutions like IIT-Delhi set new records in terms of rankings, India is fast becoming a global hub of knowledge based on the research prowess and innovative mindset of our youth," said Dharmendra Pradhan. As he pointed out, the development achieved through both institutions has been a result of the emergence of a diversified and decentralised system of higher education, which will contribute towards the realization of the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Leading the way in terms of this success is IIT-Delhi, whose reputation internationally has steadily increased over the course of the past few years. IIT-Delhi’s international ranking has increased by 79 ranks within four years, having moved from 197th rank to 118th rank on the QS World University Rankings for 2024.
This improvement came as a result of a number of factors, such as the improvement of various performance indicators. As far as Employer Reputation is concerned, the university managed to improve its ranking by 11 ranks, reaching 39th position in the world rankings. Moreover, an impressive gain of 60 ranks was observed in the indicator measuring Employment Outcomes.
