India bloc MPs raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, ahead of their march to the headquarters of the Election Commission of India.
Opposition MPs gathered in Makar Dwar of Parliament this morning to protest against the Election Commission and its handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The planned march is part of the Opposition’s broader campaign on alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process. The Election Commission and BJP have denied allegations of wrongdoing.
March From Parliament to Election Commission
The INDIA bloc MPs were expected to assemble at Makar Dwar and proceed to Nirvachan Sadan, the headquarters of the Election Commission.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said Opposition MPs would march peacefully, with the gathering expected to begin around 10:30 AM and the march around 11 AM.
The action plan was announced after an INDIA bloc meeting on September 30, when opposition parties decided to intensify their campaign against the Election Commission and the SIR exercise.
The opposition is calling for action against CEC.
The INDIA bloc has been demanding the resignation or removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, linking its demand to allegations of the electoral roll revision.
Opposition parties have claimed that changes made during the SIR process would affect legitimate voters and have repeatedly raised questions about transparency in the exercise.
The Election Commission, however, has rejected the allegations and has said its actions are legal. The poll body and the BJP denied that the voter-list changes were motivated to benefit the ruling party, according to Reuters.

Heavy Security Ahead of Protest
When the march started, security was really tight in central Delhi.
Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces were deployed around Parliament, Vijay Chowk, Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission headquarters. Various layers of barricading were also installed along the expected route.
Police said prohibitory orders were still in force in parts of New Delhi and no permission for the gathering was granted, according to reports.
AAP Skips the INDIA Bloc March
Other Opposition parties were expected to participate, but Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) decided not to join the specific INDIA bloc march.
AAP said it would continue its own political campaign on the issue. The DMK was also absent from the march.
Meanwhile, the Biju Janata Dal announced that its MPs would participate in the protest, adding to the Opposition presence.
