The Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Independent MP Pappu Yadav and other key INDIA bloc leaders joined Independent MP Pappu Yadav and other key INDIA bloc leaders in an extraordinary symbolic protest inside the Parliament complex in a high-profile symbolic protest against the government yesterday. Opposition lawmakers gathered in front of the prominent Makar Dwar and staged a theatrical skit to highlight two major issues: the alleged financial embezzlement and theft of public donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and the heavy-handed police crackdown against student demonstrators during the "Sansad Chalo" march on 20th of July.
The demonstration drew huge attention as opposition MPs huddled behind a huge banner which read "Amit Shah Sadan Se Gayab Kyun?" The lawmakers shouted loud slogans, including the words "Amit Shah istifa do", "Amit Shah sadan mein aao", and the phrase "Chadhawa chor, gaddi chorh" with a strong eye on the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and his absence from the Parliament. The symbol of the protest was a series of boxes sitting at the very front of Makar Dwar and Independent MP Pappu Yadav was draped in traditional saffron robes, as if to drive home the point at once.
During the act, prominent opposition leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and several other alliance leaders came forward and dropped currency notes into the boxes. Yadav was then shown pocketing the money as a symbol of misappropriation and theft of the precious donations for Ayodhya temple trust by some of his supporters in a movie-like way in a theatrical representation of the alleged scam. A wide range of senior opposition heavyweights, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad, Dharmendra Yadav, and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Mahua Maji had come together to see it in action.
The protest also shows the growing chasm between the Centre and the united opposition on governance and law and order. The INDIA bloc has accused the ruling government of covering up institutional problems all the time and using excessive force against young student protesters who marched onto Parliament to demand accountability over the recent competitive examination paper leak controversies. As long as the political heat remains on both inside and outside the parliament, opposition leaders are going to keep asking for answers, accountability, and ministerial resignations on the temple donation matter as well as the security crackdowns.
