Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, on Tuesday called for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying the police used force against protesting youth.
Gandhi criticized the government’s handling of the protests and accused it of suppressing the voices of young demonstrators.

"The Home Minister’s police lathi-charged protesting youth. He and the Prime Minister should resign," Rahul Gandhi said.
The Congress leader said the police action against demonstrators was unacceptable and called for political accountability. The government’s response to the protests was not to address the concerns of young people, he said.
The comments come as there is continuing political debate about student and youth issues and opposition parties say the Centre does not respond to the problems protesters are raising. The Congress has repeatedly called for discussions on education, recruitment and employment during the current Parliament session.
But the government maintains that law enforcement officers do what they do according to law and that they take control of protests for the good of public order and for the sake of safety. Most of the government's leadership has defended their approach and said democratic protests are allowed in law.
Rahul Gandhi’s call for the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister is just one part of the larger political debate between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition over governance, public accountability and the handling of protests.
The question is likely to remain politically significant as Parliament continues its Monsoon Session, as opposition parties press for discussion of the students, employment and public policy.
No official response from the Prime Minister's Office or the Union Home Ministry on Rahul Gandhi's resignation demand had been issued at the time of reporting.
