They were launched in March 2026 in response to a growth in financial cooperation between India and UAE. UPI provides the way for instant mobile payments to be made from bank accounts and RuPay, India’s card system, was integrated into UAE payment systems.

This means that while an Indian traveler shops, dines, or pays for services in UAE with a UPI app they can use such apps we already have in the home. Similarly, RuPay card will be accepted on UAE merchants, which helps in moving transactions to settle with RuPay in UAE and reducing the need for currency exchange there.

In the UAE, the news had been welcomed by the large Indian diaspora. That is a great thing about it for families and workers living abroad who can take comfort in that they can stay well connected to India’s banking system, you should have and all the more thanks to that. Travelers too are going home and not stuck between cash and exchange rates.

And the users on social media celebrated this move as a great day for India’s digital economy. Citizens said UPI used to be portrayed in India as a local innovation on the local scale and now it was becoming international. Businesses in the UAE also got interested too as it is all about opening a market for millions of Indian customers to the UAE.

UPI is already one of the world’s fastest-growing payment systems with billions of transactions in India in a single month. Its migration to the UAE has happened in connection with similar agreements existing in Singapore, Nepal, and Bhutan. RuPay cards are also gaining global acceptance, competing with global giants like Visa and Mastercard.

Experts say the move bolsters India’s position internationally in fintech. This reflects how digital public infrastructure has been an element of soft power as well as how digital public infrastructure of India is able to export technology solutions that benefit both a democratic country and businesses abroad.

We launch UPI and RuPay for this UAE customers beyond financial means to make payments available to millions of Indians abroad as part of India’s mission of supporting people’s development from region and country to global business model and also demonstrate how our nation and digital economy works in this world.
