Indian Railways has achieved a landmark in the healthcare and transportation fields as it transported a live donor heart on board the Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express. The life-saving mission enabled doctors to perform a successful heart transplant at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre in Ahmedabad.
The donor heart was transported from Surat to Ahmedabad since it was the first time that Indian Railways was used for the rapid transportation of a live human heart for transplantation. The operation showed how India's high-speed rail network can play a crucial role in emergency medical logistics.
Race Against Time
Every minute is critical in organ transplantation because donor organs are only viable for a short amount of time. Although multiple agencies worked to get the heart to the recipient without delay, the heart was a priority, and with the cooperation of the agencies.

Railway Protection Force (RPF)
Gujarat State Police
Medical teams
Organ transplant coordinators
And so their coordination meant the organ was delivered safely and within the critical transplantation window.
Special Green Corridor Created
A dedicated Green Corridor was established from Platform No. 1 at Ahmedabad Railway Station to the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre.
In a joint operation with RPF & Gujarat Police, the traffic-free route allowed the medical team to take the donor heart from the station to the hospital without any delays caused by city traffic.
The swift pace permitted surgeons to start the heart transplant procedure immediately upon the organ's arrival.
Indian Railways Calls It a Proud Moment
Ved Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Ahmedabad Division, described the achievement as a proud milestone for Indian Railways.
He said the successful transport of a live donor heart aboard the Vande Bharat Express demonstrates the railway network is able to serve not only passengers and freight but also critical humanitarian and healthcare missions.
He attributed the success to the excellent coordination among Indian Railways, Railway Protection Force, Gujarat Police, and medical teams, and said that the ability to save a human life is one of the highest forms of public service.
New possibilities for Emergency Healthcare
The railway authorities feel the operation opens up a new chapter in India’s emergency healthcare system. The Vande Bharat Express’ speed, reliability, and punctuality could be an important component of future organ transportation and other time-sensitive medical missions in the country.
But the success also demonstrates the way modern transport systems can support life-saving healthcare services by linking cities to hospitals in a short time.
Indian Railways thanked the Railway Protection Force, Gujarat State Police, doctors, organ transplant coordinators, hospital staff, and railway personnel who made the mission possible.
