On Tuesday, the world’s notable Srisailam Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple’s security personnel, acting as part of a larger enforcement campaign, confiscated ₹30 lakh in unaccounted cash from the temple. The recovery was conducted on a standard vehicle inspection as part of heightened security for the imminent Maha Shivaratri Brahmotsavam (to be held in February 2026).
An influx of pilgrims from various states of India is currently flooding the temple town at present, where the district administration and temple authorities have intensified the vigil at all entry points and toll gates.
The Seizure: How It Occurred
According to the case study, the Temple's Chief Security Officer, Srinivasa Rao, and his security officers intercepted a Kia car with a Maharashtra registration. Upon inspecting the vehicle's interior, security personnel found a bag stuffed with high-value currency notes. The driver and the passengers claimed they were part of the gold trade and had traveled from Maharashtra for Lord Mallikarjuna. But when asked to provide necessary legal documentation or bank withdrawal proofs for money such as this, they could give no satisfactory explanation or materials.
Police and Income Tax Probe Initiated
The temple security handed over the car and money to the Srisailam Town Police after the seizure. Current Situation: Police are taking the people into custody for questioning.
- Legal Breaches: Potential contravention of the PMLA and the Income Tax law as it relates to the transportation of large sums of cash without a declaration is being looked into by the authorities.
- Inter-State Investigation: Officials are reportedly coordinating with Maharashtra counterparts to verify the business credentials of the individuals involved.
Srisailam's Robust Safety Grid
The Srisailam temple is divided into 11 security zones during the peak festival season. As the Maha Shivaratri Brahmotsavam expects to attract almost 20% more devotees compared to the previous year, the Nandyal District Police team has deployed over 3,000 men. "The safety of adherents and the prevention of offenses is our first aim at this moment. More checks at toll gates and at parking areas are crucial to ensure there is peace and tranquility in darshan across all the regions," said a senior official. The seized amount is anticipated to be given to the Income Tax Department for formal investigation of its origin.
