A missing person case that has been unresolved for nearly two years now has taken a shocking turn after Gujarat Police found skeletal remains believed to be those of a man who was allegedly murdered by his wife, her former boyfriend, and another associate.
The victim, who was identified as Jignesh Mavadiya, had been missing since 2024. His wife, who is in Australia for work and for years had claimed to have travelled to Australia for their jobs, kept telling relatives that his employer did not allow him to communicate with his family members via the phone.
But investigators now believe the story was fabricated to hide an alleged murder.
According to police, the skeletal remains were recovered from beneath the floor of a factory in Jamnagar. The accused dug a pit about 12 feet deep, buried the body and then covered the area with a thick layer of concrete in an attempt to erase all traces of the crime.
Police have arrested Prithvi, also known as Bhumiben, the wife of the victim, along with her former boyfriend Nilesh Kachhatiya and his associate Balveer Verma. All three are accused of conspiring to murder Jignesh and concealing his body.
The case has been compared to the Bollywood thriller Drishyam in that the filmmakers are alleged to have tried to conceal the crime and deceive investigators for a long period of time. There is no correlation between the alleged concealment of evidence and the conspiracy to divert suspicion, rather than to suggest a link to the film itself.
Investigators say the breakthrough occurred after fresh leads prompted a renewed investigation of the missing person case. The police searched the factory site where forensic investigators dug through the concrete floor and unearthed skeletal remains believed to be those of Jignesh. DNA tests and other tests will confirm the identity of the remains.
Investigators are trying to make sense of the entire sequence of events in terms of motives behind the alleged murder and the roles of each of the accused. Forensic examinations are ongoing on financial transactions, digital evidence, and witness statements.
