Jay Singh Rathore has become a trending name on X after an online fundraising appeal for his younger sister’s eye treatment turned into a controversy involving alleged fake medical documents, donations of more than ₹1.5 lakh and lengthy discussions on X Spaces.
For the first time, an emotional plea for financial help was turned into a social media drama when the hospital that the appeal was based on issued a warning.
Who is Jay Singh Rathore?
Jay Singh Rathore does not appear to be a well-known celebrity or public figure. He came back in the X post after he introduced himself as a 16-year-old and sought financial assistance for his 12-year-old sister's eye treatment.
According to reports, he said his sister had a serious eye condition and needed immediate treatment. Medical documents and payment details were provided to the public, he said, as well as to people online who could help.
Within approximately 24 hours, the appeal reportedly collected more than ₹1.5 lakh. Rathore shared a screenshot of ₹1,58,282 being collected.
Why did the Fundraiser turn out to be controversial?
The situation changed when Shroff Eye Centre, the hospital referred to in the fundraising appeal, issued a public warning.
The hospital said it had learned that someone had allegedly created a fake patient record, prescription and estimate sheet using its letterheads and was reaching out to individuals and organisations for financial assistance.
The warning triggered questions among people who had donated to the appeal and had a lively debate on X.
What did Rathore say?
Following the hospital's warning, Rathore faced questions from users and alleged donors during several X Spaces.
According to the reports, he understood the money was not being used for the purpose described in the original appeal and said his father needed treatment.
He also admitted that he had made a mistake and discussed returning money to donors.
But statements made on social media are still claims and must be taken as such unless verified. Some alleged repayment screenshots have also been circulated online but the exact amount returned has not been verified.

The controversy spread quickly because the entire episode took place publicly on X.
An emotional medical appeal was followed by a large fundraising response, a hospital warning, questions over documents and hours of live discussions involving Rathore.
The unusual nature of the X Spaces led to numerous clips, memes and reactions and pushed his name further into the trending topics on the platform. Economic Times reported that the name was among the top trending topics on X in India on September 23.
What happened to all that money?
This is still one of the leading questions in the controversy.
Rathore claimed he would give back money to donors. Some posts claiming refunds had been made have appeared online, but there is currently no independently verified public accounting establishing exactly how much was collected, refunded or remains outstanding.
As such, claims about the final amount should not be presented as facts.
