A brazen lawlessness instilled panic and outrage in the Gauripada neighborhood of Kalyan West where a heavily intoxicated young man brutally attacked a duty police constable with a wooden stick. The violent incident, all of which was caught on video on nearby surveillance cameras, has reignited a debate on social media about the safety and security of police officers on the front lines.
The frightening sequence of events started on the evening when local residents in the packed Gauripada area noticed a young man loitering aggressively outside residential properties. He was drunk and started to create a huge public nuisance, shouting obscenities, banging on gates, causing panic among families. As the situation became more and more dangerous, worried residents immediately called the police control room to try and restore order.
Police constable Ganesh Chavan of Khadakpada police station rushed to the scene and responded quickly to the distress call to assess and diffuse the situation. He tried to calm the aggressive youth and advised him to leave the neighborhood from where it was happening as soon as he came to the scene. But the youth, later identified as Rahul Tayade, did not heed the police order and became aggressive. Witness accounts and official reports point to a verbal argument between the officer and the youth, and it went into a physical fight.
For no reason, the accused lunged at the policeman with a wooden stick and landed heavy blows on Constable Chavan, wounding him. Despite the sudden and aggressive attack, the injured officer held his own with tactical restraint until more backup arrived from the local station.
The whole incident was captured by a high-resolution CCTV camera in the area. The video was posted online within hours, and people made all kinds of noise in the local community groups and social media groups in the vicinity of Khadakpada and wanted to take legal action against the culprit for his non-repentant approach and manner towards law enforcement. The police in Khadakpada immediately filed a criminal complaint against Rahul Tayade under the relevant sections of the law and took action against him for his acts. The injured constable has since been treated at home by medical personnel, and medical care is being provided to him while the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
