The bakery in Vijayapura town of Devanahalli Taluk (26/27/15) of Bengaluru Rural District was sealed by authorities because officials found that potato chips were being prepared using rotten potatoes and dirty water. There were complaints from residents, who said that several children got sick after eating the snacks.
Concerns over food safety and hygiene standards in local food establishments, however, are being raised, and they want stricter inspections for the health of the public.
The Children Reportedly Fell Ill After Eating Chips
According to local reports, Venkatesh purchased potato chips from Shri Sairam Hot Chips Bakery for his children. The children started coughing shortly after eating the chips, and the family suspected the food was wrong.
Venkatesh examined the chips and apparently noticed black spots on them. He had been worried about poor-quality ingredients, and he went to the bakery to see how the chips were being prepared.
Residents complain of unhygienic food preparation
During the visit, workers were seen preparing potato chips in extremely unhealthy conditions. They said the bakery was using spoiled potatoes and dirty water while cooking.
The discovery upset the residents, and they argued with the bakery owner and called the authorities immediately to see about it.
Officials Conduct Inspection
After the complaint, officials from the department went to the bakery and inspected it in the presence of residents.
Food safety officials collected potato chips for analysis during the inspection. The samples are being sent for testing to determine whether the food products meet prescribed safety standards and whether they pose any health risks to consumers.
A notice was also given to the bakery owner before sealing the building. Further legal action will depend on laboratory results and on the ongoing investigation, they said.
Investigation Underway
But the potato chips are still not confirmed to contain harmful contaminants; a laboratory investigation is ongoing. The investigation will establish if food safety regulations were violated and if more sanctions should be levied.
The bakery will remain sealed until the inquiry is finished and the authorities decide what action to take with it.
Food Safety Concerns Resurface
Food businesses need to maintain hygiene standards, and the incident is a reminder to them of the need to do so. Health experts warn that spoiled foods or drinking spoiled water or unhygienic water can cause foodborne illness, gastrointestinal infections, and other health issues, particularly in children.
Residents have asked the government to regularly conduct inspections of bakeries, restaurants, and snack shops so that food sold to the public is prepared in a hygienic manner.
Consumer rights advocates also have advised people to be vigilant while buying ready-to-eat food and to report suspected violations of food safety standards to the authorities as soon as possible.
We must wait for final laboratory results before we can conclude on the quality and safety of the products that are sold by the bakery, officials said.
