Bengaluru Centre’s India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued rainfall in parts of Karnataka over the next few days, with heavy showers expected in several districts. The weather department is expecting thunderstorms and strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph in some areas on September 22 and 23.
According to the latest forecast, Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka are likely to witness widespread rainfall activity. Moderate to heavy rain is expected as the weather system moves into districts already experiencing active monsoon conditions.
Dakshina Kannada district in Coastal Karnataka will receive heavy rainfall at isolated places on September 22. Light to moderate rainfall is expected for Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, as well as heavy rainfall at some places. The rainfall is expected to improve water supply but may also lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas.
The IMD has also issued a heavy rain warning for parts of North Interior Karnataka. Districts such as Bagalkote, Gadag, Koppal, and Raichur are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places. Thunderstorms and strong winds are also expected to accompany the showers, so it is recommended that people travel with a safety-conscious attitude.
Bengaluru and surrounding districts are also on high alert. Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Tumakuru districts. Some parts of the state capital could experience heavy showers, leading to waterlogging, traffic jams, and disruptions during peak hours. Light to moderate rainfall is expected to occur in Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Hassan, Kodagu, Shivamogga, and Vijayanagara.
The rainfall activity is expected to increase further on September 23. Heavy rainfall is predicted for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, while Uttara Kannada may see heavy rains. Kalaburagi and Vijayapura districts of North Karnataka have been warned to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Bagalkote, Bidar, Raichur, and Yadgir districts are also under a heavy rain alert.
In South Interior Karnataka, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall, while Ballari, Chitradurga, Hassan, and Vijayanagara districts are also likely to see intense showers. Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts are likely to receive light to moderate rain at a few places.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has also forecast heavy rainfall in parts of South Interior Karnataka on September 23 and 24. In view of the expected weather conditions, an Orange Alert has been issued for several districts, indicating the possibility of significant weather-related disruptions.
The rainfall during the 24 hours ending Monday evening showed active monsoon conditions in North Interior Karnataka. Nargund in Gadag district recorded the highest rainfall at 9 cm, followed by 5 cm in Kushtagi of Koppal district. Hosahalli in Vijayanagara district and Hukkeri in Belagavi district recorded 4 cm of rainfall each.
Authorities have advised residents, farmers, and travellers to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding and strong winds. With the monsoon remaining active, Karnataka is expected to witness continued rainfall over the coming days.
