The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to widespread rainfall in Karnataka (Bengaluru) over the next two days. Weather authorities said the favourable monsoon conditions will bring rain, thunderstorms and lightning and strong winds to parts of the state on September 17 and 18. Residents should be on the lookout for heavy weather.
According to the forecast, South Interior Karnataka will experience the most significant weather activity. Bangalore Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Kolar, Tumakuru, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, and Vijayanagara districts may receive rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph may also occur in several areas, which will lead to fallen tree branches and disruption at the local level.
Bengaluru is forecast to see cloudy skies, intermittent showers, and occasional thunderstorms during the forecast period. The weather department has advised commuters to plan for heavy rain during peak traffic hours, as rain during peak commuter traffic will lead to congestion on the roads. Motorists and two-wheeler riders have been urged to exercise caution, especially during heavy downpours and low visibility caused by rain and lightning.
North Interior Karnataka districts like Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, and Belagavi are likely to receive light rainfall at isolated places. But weather conditions are expected to intensify on September 18. Bagalkote, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Vijayapura, and surrounding areas will likely be hit by moderate rainfall and strong winds. Farmers and residents are advised to remain updated on local weather advisories.
The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are also expected to get light to moderate rain over the next two days. No major weather warnings have been issued for the coastal belt; however, intermittent showers are expected to continue throughout the day. Fishermen and those involved in coastal activities need to keep track of the weather, especially if wind speeds increase along the shoreline.
Public safety officials have advised the public to be prepared for thunderstorms and to take precautions. People should consider carrying umbrellas or raincoats when they go outdoors and avoid sheltering under trees during lightning activity. Staying indoors during severe thunderstorms and avoiding open areas can significantly reduce the risk of lightning-related incidents. There will also be heavy rain expected in much of Karnataka over the next 48 hours, and people need to watch weather bulletins and keep an eye out for changing weather conditions.
