The southwest monsoon is still active across Karnataka, and widespread rainfall is taking place in many parts of the state. Heavy rainfall is expected in coastal Karnataka and the Malnad region on August 5; moderate rainfall is expected in coastal Karnataka and in some other districts; and strong winds are expected in many other areas.
Residents should also be warned of the risk of rain and strong winds in the state from persistent rain and strong winds to normal life in the disaster-prone areas, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu are expected to get heavy rainfall at some points. Weather officials have said these districts could experience intense rain spells because of intense monsoon activity in the region. Residents in low-lying areas, near rivers, and in landslide-prone areas should be kept updated on the latest weather forecast.
In coastal Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts could see heavy rain with strong winds blowing at 30 to 40 kmph. Localised flooding, waterlogging, and transportation disruption are expected in coastal Karnataka. Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to be careful on the shoreline because of the rough weather.
The North Interior Karnataka districts like Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, and Koppal are expected to receive moderate rainfall and winds with 40 to 50 kmph. Bagalkote, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura, and Yadgir may also see light rainfall in some places.
South Interior Karnataka is also expected to remain under the influence of monsoon showers. Heavy rainfall is expected in Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu districts, and several other districts are also likely to get some moderate rain. The ongoing rainfall should also help improve water storage in reservoirs and agricultural prospects in the region.
Bengaluru and its surrounding districts will also likely be wet on August 5. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Davangere, Hassan, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Tumakuru are forecast to be hit with moderate rainfall, and there will be winds around 30 -40 kmph. In Ballari, Chitradurga, and Vijayanagara districts, we expect light rainfall. Traffic in Bengaluru can be slow and waterlogged in some places when it rains heavily during intense rains.
The weather department has predicted that the same conditions are likely to continue on August 6. Coastal areas such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada are again likely to get heavy rainfall and strong winds. Moderate rainfall is expected in Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, and Koppal districts, while light rain is also probable in Bagalkote, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura, and Yadgir.
The recent rainfall data show the intensity of monsoon activity across Karnataka. Agumbe in Shivamogga district received the highest rainfall at 16 cm in the 24 hours ending Tuesday evening. Kundapura in Udupi district received 15 cm, Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada received 14 cm, and Siddapura in Udupi district also received 14 cm of rainfall. Gerusoppa in Uttara Kannada and Shakti Nagar Observatory in Dakshina Kannada received 13 cm each. Kollur in Udupi and Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada received 11 cm, while Bantwal received 10 cm.
There was also heavy rainfall at Karkala in Udupi district, Puttur, Mani, and Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada, and Jagalabet in Uttara Kannada. Interestingly, Manvi in Raichur district also received 9 cm of rainfall, indicating that monsoon showers were widespread in the state.
With heavy rain likely to continue over the next two days, authorities have advised citizens to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during intense downpours, and follow safety guidelines issued by local administrations and disaster management agencies.
