The Karnataka government has asked for the postponement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's proposed visit to Bengaluru, originally scheduled for August 3. The Cauvery water-sharing dispute is still playing out in the state.
The decision was taken in view of the present state of law and order in Karnataka and public protest against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, the government said. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has proposed to his Tamil Nadu counterpart to postpone the visit until conditions are peaceful, so discussions can take place in a safe and secure environment.
Rising Tensions Over Cauvery Water Release
The Cauvery water dispute has once again stirred strong reactions in Karnataka after directives by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) and the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on water release to Tamil Nadu.
The issue has galvanised protests in several parts of Karnataka, and farmers’ organisations and pro-Kannada organisations have rallied around the water release. Protesters say Karnataka should prioritise its drinking water and irrigation needs before releasing water downstream, especially in periods of insufficient rainfall.
Many road demonstrations and organized public meetings have been held in some areas, reflecting growing public sentiment on the interstate river dispute.
Planned Meeting Put on Hold
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is expected to visit Bengaluru on August 3 for talks on how to defuse tension and find a political solution to the Cauvery issue.
But considering the charged atmosphere in Karnataka, the state government felt that the visit at this stage could cause unnecessary inconvenience for the visiting delegation and may not provide the ideal environment for productive dialogue.
The request to postpone the meeting was made to ensure that any future discussions would be held in the right spirit and in a peaceful environment.
Government Emphasises Dialogue
Karnataka also requested a postponement and said it would resolve the problem through constitutional and legal channels. The state government said dialogue between the two states would continue to be necessary to solve the water-sharing problem.
And officials said the postponement was not the end of talks, but rather a way to get back to good talks once the tension was resolved.
Cauvery conflict is still an issue for both states
The Cauvery river has been at the center of one of India’s longest-running interstate water disputes between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for over 20 years. Water allocation decisions are often difficult to make during years of poor rainfall, leading to legal processes and public protests.
