Karnataka’s spiritual and social fabric has been rocked by allegations of sexual misconduct and blackmail against Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji, the pontiff of Kudalasangama Mahapeetha. A woman has approached Karnataka State Commission for Women with a detailed complaint filed on physical and mental exploitation.
The allegations: Breach of Trust and Assault
She says her relationship with Swamiji started because she was into his social struggles and activism. She used to meet him during his trips to Bengaluru to talk about and support his various movements. The Swamiji even invited her to the Mutt under the guise of giving her ‘Prasadam.’
The woman says the Swamiji abused her trust at the Mutt. She says he started with an inappropriate conversation using indecent language and grew to sexually assaulting her. She says she was subjected to sexual violence when she was unaware and vulnerable.
Blackmail and Digital Harassment
Perhaps the most disturbing part of the complaint is the accusation of non-consensual filming. The victim claims the Swamiji recorded private videos of the sexual assault without her knowledge. He is using this footage to blackmail her into further sexual cooperation.
She wrote in her detailed letter to the Women's Commission: “He calls me every night and insists that I get on a naked video call. He threatens that if I don’t comply, he will leak my private videos on social media platforms."
The complainant has expressed extreme fear; the continuous harassment has brought severe mental trauma, public humiliation, and constant anxiety, she has said. She has asked the Commission to act quickly and take action to protect her dignity and hold the accused accountable.
The profile of the accused. Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji is a popular person in Karnataka, who has been leading the campaign for reservation in the Panchamasali Lingayat community in 2A. His status within the community and in state politics make such allegations very significant.
The State Women's Commission has received the complaint and will direct the police to investigate the matter. The Swamiji has not yet made any official public comments on it. In such cases, Mutt scholars say, the Mutt's claims are politically motivated; but the victim's testimony backed by digital evidence needs to be examined.
The incident has led to an intense debate on social media about the responsibility of religious leaders and the safety of women who encounter influential public figures. The authorities have to take a fair investigation without political pressure.
