The southwest monsoon has resumed momentum in Karnataka, and the southwest monsoon is gathering power throughout the state; rain has come back over many parts of the state. Heavy rainfall is expected to hit coastal and Malnad districts of the state, with heavy rainfall in coastal and Malnad districts on 7 August, and moderate showers in many interior areas of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, on 7 August, according to the latest forecast of IMD (India Meteorological Department).
The weather department warns that Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, and Shivamogga districts could get heavy rainfall in some areas during the day. Residents in these districts should be cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Heavy Rain Alert for Coastal Karnataka
The IMD has forecast heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds in the coastal belt of Karnataka. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts are expected to experience strong winds with speeds between 30-40 kmph and heavy rains at some places in the coastal belt.
The weather will be active throughout the day; however, there will be the possibility of some waterlogging in urban areas, and traffic will be affected, and some transport will be impacted, and so will be minor disruptions that are not too much in the road network. Fishermen and coastal areas have been advised to monitor weather updates and take care to be watchful.
Malnad Region likely to Get Intense Showers
In the Malnad region, Shivamogga district should also see heavy rainfall at some places. Heavy winds could reach 40-50 kmph in some areas, the IMD has also predicted. Heavy showers might even be expected in nearby Chikkamagaluru district, giving rise to landslides and rising water levels in streams and rivers.
The weather in these districts is closely monitored by authorities, and in hilly regions, in which the continuous rainfall can lead to localised disruptions.
Rain Expected Across North Karnataka
Rainfall activity is not limited to coastal and Malnad. In North Interior Karnataka, Belagavi district is likely to have heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Bagalkote, Bidar, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura, Dharwad, Haveri, and Yadgir districts are expected to get light to moderate rainfall. The showers will help relieve the dry conditions that some parts of the region had in recent weeks.
Bengaluru and Surrounding Districts to Witness Showers
The IMD has also forecast moderate rainfall in several South Interior Karnataka districts such as Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Kodagu, Hassan, and Vijayanagara.
These locations might also be hit by strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, especially at times of thunderstorms. Bengaluru drivers should consider the weather situation as they should plan their travel, as rain might impact traffic movement during peak times very soon, they said.
Monsoon Activity Strengthens Across State
According to IMD, monsoon activity has remained normal for Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka, but it had been relatively weak over South Interior Karnataka in recent days. But rainfall activity is on the rise across the state, and many districts have measurable precipitation.
Among the highest rainfall records, Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada district received 9 cm of rainfall, highlighting the intensity of the ongoing monsoon spell.
Rainfall to Continue on August 8
The weather department has indicated that the wet spell will continue on August 8 as well. Heavy rains are expected in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts again. Similar conditions are also likely in Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, keeping authorities on alert.
With monsoon conditions in full force, as the monsoon winds are increasing, residents in Karnataka should be updated with official weather bulletins and take precautions in areas that are prone to flooding, landslides, and strong winds.
